12th Annual Palo Alto Weekly Photo Contest
Judges
Margo Davis
Margo Davis is a freelance photographer living in Palo Alto.
She teaches at both UC Santa Cruz and UC Berkeley Extension
programs. Her popular photo workshop in Paris each July is sponsored
by the Travel/Study program at UC Berkeley. She has photographed
in the Caribbean, Africa, Brazil, Europe, Mexico and Asia. Her
work is represented by the Scott Nichols Gallery in San Francisco.
Her major publications include: "Antigua Black," "Portrait
of an Island People"; "Women Writers of the West Coast"
and "The Stanford Album, A Photographic History."
Margo is currently working on a new book project. Her work has
appeared in many publications, the most recent being in Black
and White Magazine, January/February issue 2001.
David Hibbard
David Hibbard has been photographing the natural world for more
than 35 years. Early in his career, a conversation with Ansel
Adams encouraged him to find his own way as a photographic artist.
Today, David photographs extensively along the California and
Washington coasts, exploring their tidepools, rock forms, changes
of weather, and lush coastal canyons. He exhibits his work frequently
in the Bay Area and teaches workshops at the Pacific Art League
in Palo Alto.
Ellen Manchester
Ellen Manchester is an arts administrator, curator and editor.
She hasworked at the Friends of Photography Ansel Adams Center,
Fraenkel Gallery and the George Eastman House in Rochester,
N.Y. She has served as a guest curator for the Oakland Museum,
the de Young Museum and numerous nonprofit galleries and art
centers. She was co-founder and project director of The Rephotographic
Survey Project published as Second View. She and her husband,
Robert Dawson, were co-directors of The Water in the West Project
-- a collaborative photographic project addressing water issues
in the American West. She was the author of Arid Waters: Photographs
from the Water in the West Project; photographic editor for
the book, Colorado:Visions of an American Landscape; and co-curator
of the University of Colorado's exhibition and book The Great
West: Real/Ideal.
Kate Robertson
Kate Robertson is the chief photographer at the Palo Alto Weekly.She
holds an undergraduate degree in photocommunications from St.
Edward's University in Austin, Texas. She has been a teaching
assistant for photographic workshops with organizations such
as the Austin Museum of Art Laguna-Gloria and the Texas Photographic
Society. She has done freelance work for publications ranging
from Australian Elle Magazine to the Waco Tribune-Herald. Kate
also volunteers her time as a photo coach for San Francisco
State University photojournalism students as well as talking
to various photo groups and University classes in the area.
She has been with the Weekly for over two years.
