Robin Tobias never took any classes in photography and never really studied the art at all.

"I'm just an amateur," the Menlo Park physical therapist said. "Sometimes I just carry my camera around. I actually got it a year and a half ago, so I'm just trying to use it."

Tobias shot this particular photo backstage at the San Francisco Ballet. The girls, one of whom is Tobias' daughter, were all dancers in "The Nutcracker."

"It was kind of an interesting cascade of events," Tobias said. "The girls were posed for a picture pretty politely, but they were in a giddy mood. I just kept taking pictures as they kept getting sillier and sillier. I guess this photo was the last one I took."
