On Sunday, December 2, Laura Kathryn Frey loving sister, daughter, and friend lost her valiant 3+ year battle with cancer at the age of 50. Laura was born on August 21, 1968 along with her identical twin sister Jennifer. Born I n Hanau, Germany, parents are Theodore Drake Frey and Barbara Thornton Frey. Laura, Jennifer and their older sister Leslie lived in Brussels, Belgium for the first four years of her life. The family moved to Lafayette, California in 1972 where she attended Happy Valley Elementary School, Stanley Middle School and graduated from Acalanes High School in 1987. During her formative years in Lafayette, Laura loved playing soccer, basketball and softball. She played on the local traveling teams, she also played varsity basketball and softball for Acalanes High School. In college, Laura continued to play soccer for Lewis and Clark College in Portland, Oregon. Both Laura and her twin sister Jennifer Frey attended and graduated from Lewis and Clark College in 1991. William Albert Alfano Jr

On Saturday, December 1st, 2018 William Albert Alfano Jr passed from this life, he was 87 years old. He was born on June 14th, 1931 in Paterson, New Jersey. He was the only child of William and Jeanette Alfano. He graduated from Barringer High School in 1948. He attended The University of New Mexico where he met his future wife, the former Marilouise Mayer who preceded him in death in 2007. They would be married for almost 55 years and raise four children. After graduating from the University of New Mexico in January, 1953 he served as a Navel officer for three years. After leaving the Navy he attended graduate school at California State University at San Diego, where he received a Masters of Science degree in Physics. After working as an Engineer for several companies he joined Granger Associates in Palo Alto in 1960. He would rise at Granger to become Vice President and head of the antenna division in 1968. He left Granger in 1970 and joined ITT Jennings, where he would become manager of Export Marketing; he retired from Jennings in 1996. His four children survive him, William A. Alfano III, Richard C. Lance Whitney Freeman, 54, passed away in Menlo Park, California on November 30, 2018 Lance was born August 4, 1964 in Anaheim, CA and grew up in Goleta, CA. He graduated from Dos Pueblos High School in 1982 and from San Jose State University in 1988. He was a real estate agent in Menlo Park, CA for over 30 years. Lance had a great sense of humor, and loved making people laugh. Growing up he enjoyed fishing, hiking, camping, playing tennis and surfing. Lance had an eclectic taste in music and loved traveling. Lance enjoyed being with people, laughing, talking bullshit and just hanging out. As he got older he still enjoyed playing tennis, surfing and loved spending time with his kids. Barbara Condon Sonsini

Barbara Condon Sonsini, the wife of Larry Sonsini, a Founder and Senior Partner of Wilson Sonsini Goodrich & Rosati, died on November 28, 2018, surrounded by her loving family. She was 79 years old. The cause of death is ovarian cancer, which was diagnosed in June of this past year. Barbara was born in San Francisco on November 7, 1939 to Colonel John Condon and Betty Condon of San Mateo. Her grandfather, Charles G. Harvey, attended the U.S. States Military Academy at West Point at the same time as General Douglas MacArthur and served with him in the Philippines during World War II. Barbara graduated from Pomona College and received a Masters of Education from Stanford University. She also studied in Geneva, Vienna, and Mexico. For many years, she taught German and French at Cupertino High School in California. Barbara grew up an avid tennis player, competing in several junior tournaments in her youth. Later, she became a devoted and accomplished bridge player, accumulating over 7,500 masterpoints in a relatively short time, while playing in several regional and national tournaments, as well as the World Bridge Team Championships in Indonesia in 2013. On Thanksgiving Day November 22, 2018 Mark Quinlan Browne passed away at the age of 62. Born October 16, 1956, Mark grew up in Menlo Park and most recently lived in Half Moon Bay. Mark graduated from Woodside High School in Redwood City in 1975. He loved the ocean and if he wasn’t working on his boat, he was diving for abalone, fishing or sailing. During his life, Mark lived at a few marina’s in the Bay Area but called the coast his home. Growing up Mark spent his summers with his family at Martin’s Beach, where he surfed endlessly and built life-long friendships. Benjamin Garrett Carson passed away at the age of 38 on the evening of Nov. 15, 2018, at the Stanford Hospital in Palo Alto. He is survived by his wife, Brooke, and 7-year-old daughter, Claire. Ben was born May 12, 1980, in Springfield, Illinois. He spent his early childhood years in the Maryland suburbs to the northwest of Washington, D.C. He moved with his family to Vancouver, Washington in 1989. That year at the age of 9 he first met his future wife, Brooke Agate. They attended Hudson's Bay High School together in Vancouver, where Ben served as student body vice president and captain of the varsity basketball team his senior year. An active member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Ben served in the Chile Conception Mission from 1999 to 2001. He and Brooke were married in the Portland Oregon Temple on June 21, 2002. In 2004 Ben graduated from the University of California, Berkeley, with a bachelor's in Economics. Virginia Nalley Woodson

Virginia was born in Oklahoma and passed away at Stanford Hospital surrounded by close family. As a young girl, Virginia moved from town to town in the Midwest building church congregations with her parents, a Christian minister and his wife, the choir director and lead vocalist. During the Second World War, the family lived in the Bay Area while her father was a chaplain in the Pacific theater. The family eventually settled in Kansas City where Virginia attended high school and then the University of Kansas. With BA and Master’s Degrees in education, she spent the majority of her career teaching elementary school, much of it pioneering the creation of magnet programs for gifted children. The birth of her first grandchild brought Virginia to the Bay Area. She spent many years on staff at Menlo Park Presbyterian Church, where she served as administrative assistant to the executive pastor. After retirement, she remained committed to serving that congregation in a variety of volunteer capacities. Virginia loved her extended family and her many dear friends from the Menlo community. Jean Walls Morosco Olmsted, 93, a 46-year resident of Palo Alto, died on Monday, Nov. 12, 2018 at home with her children at her side. Jean's children would like to express their thanks to the caregivers and staff at Homecare California, Vitas, and Home Instead Senior Care and to everyone at Avenidas who helped her live out her life at home as she wished. Jean was born in Los Angeles in 1925 to Eleanor Prescott Walls, born in Los Angeles in 1893, and Albert Harold Morosco, adopted from the St. Paul's Catholic Orphan Asylum of St. Paul, Minnesota in 1892 (b. 1891?). Jean graduated from Escondido High School in 1943, where she worked afternoons with classmates in 1942-43 packing lemons to allow the regular packers to switch to war production. She attended Stanford on a full academic scholarship, graduating in 1947. In 1948, she attended the Radcliffe Management Training Program, where she made lifelong friends including Carolyn Grohne (née Negley) and Margaret Mansfield. Robert Falconer

We honor the life of Robert Falconer, who passed away November 6, 2018 at the Sequoias Retirement Home in Portola Valley, CA. Bob was born August 30, 1926 in Whittier, CA and grew up in nearby Fullerton. He joined the Navy immediately upon graduation from Fullerton High School and served through the duration of World War II. He was called back to service for the Korean Conflict, during which he was an instructor at the Naval Electronics Training School on Treasure Island in San Francisco Bay. Bob entered Stanford University in 1947, where he met Judy Anderson at a Freshman “Jolly-Up” (a get acquainted social event). Bob and Judy both graduated from Stanford in 1951, and married that June. Bob pursued a career in electrical engineering at a series of firms in Silicon Valley that grew out of his naval service. Bob and Judy moved to Portola Valley in 1956, where they raised three children, Steve, Lorry and Rob, and lived in a series of houses before moving to the Sequoias in 2003. Sid Simon, long time resident of Palo Alto, passed away peacefully at his home on Oct. 26, 2018 at the age of 101. His wonderful caregivers and family had surrounded him with love as he was nearing the end of his well lived life. Born in Detroit, March 26, 1917, Sid moved with his family at the age of two to Los Angeles, He later moved to the Bay Area starting off in Berkeley and finally settling in Palo Alto in 1954. Early on, Sid discovered a passion for tennis that continued throughout his life. He started with pickup games at the public park where he eventually got good enough to compete in various city and high school tournaments. A highlight was a doubles match where at the age of 15, Sid and his partner defeated Bobby Riggs It was quite the upset at the time since Bobby was a national champion and later Hall of Famer, just starting his career. Sid continued to play tennis throughout his life until a torn rotator cuff at the age of 87 took him out of the game.
