Storm Web page gets heavy use

A Web page set up by the Palo Alto Weekly to provide updated emergency storm information received heavy use between Friday and Sunday.

More than 1,500 individuals utilized the Weekly's "Storm Emergency Information" site, making a total of over 7,000 requests for different pages.

"This was an experiment to see if our Web site could serve the role of a 24-hour source of breaking news during a community emergency," according to Weekly publisher Bill Johnson. "The response was far greater than we ever expected, and makes clear that the Weekly can successfully supplement its semiweekly coverage with reports on the Internet at any time events or needs dictate." The Weekly's storm coverage on the Web included frequent updates on creek levels and other developments, plus a forum that allowed residents to post their own comments, suggestions, offers of help and questions.

The storm updates will continue to be available as warranted and can be accessed through Palo Alto Online, the Weekly's Web site, at The site is hosted by Palo Alto-based Internet Distribution Services.
