The seventh-seeded Stanford men’s soccer team meets No. 3 Georgetown in the NCAA championship semifinals Friday at 3 p.m. in Cary, North Carolina.

The Cardinal (14-2-5) beat Clemson on penalty kicks to advance to its fourth Final Four in five years. The Hoyas (18-1-3) beat Pac-12 champion Washington 2-1 in the quarterfinals.

Georgetown coach Brian Wiese was an assistant at Stanford for five years under Bobby Clark between 1996-2000. He earned a master’s degree while coaching at Stanford, which had a 71-21-12 mark during his tenure.

Cardinal Jeremy Gunn is one of two NCAA coaches to win three consecutive NCAA titles. Gunn is 110-31-28 at Stanford and 297-92-59 overall.

Stanford is 0-2-1 in three prior meetings with Georgetown. The teams tied in their last meeting last season.

Redshirt senior center back Tanner Beason is one of 15 semifinalists for the MAC Hermann Trophy for the second consecutive season.

After starting the first 76 matches of his career, Beason missed his first game at Stanford on Oct. 6 against Oregon State following a second-half injury sustained against Washington three days prior. He missed the next eight games before returning to the lineup in the regular-season finale against Cal.

Beason, a first-team All-American last season, became the first person on conference history to sweep both Pac-12 Player and Defensive Player of the Year awards in 2018. He is third on the team in goals (5) and fifth in points (11) in 13 matches played this year.

Beason was one of four Stanford players named to the United Soccer Coaches All-Far West Region Team. He was joined by goalkeeper Andrew Thomas and mid-fielder Derek Waldeck on the first team. Ousseni Bouda, the Pac-12 Freshman of the Year, earned a spot on the second team.
