Looks like Stanford basketball picked the wrong week to play Oregon. Hours after the women were mauled by the Ducks, the Cardinal men fell behind early and spent the rest of the game trying to dig out of a hole, which just kept getting deeper.
Stanford could not overcome its worst first-half shooting performance of the season, falling to Oregon 69-46 Sunday night at Matthew Knight Arena.
The Cardinal (12-11, 5-6 Pac-12) leaves the Beaver State with a split of the Oregon schools, after defeating Oregon State by 23 on Thursday in Corvallis.
Stanford missed its first 13 shots and opened the game 1-for-21 from the field to fall behind 16-2 midway through the first half. The Cardinal rebounded late in the half, knocking down six of its final nine shots of the opening half to cut it to 30-20 at the intermission.
The Cardinal shot 22.6 percent from the field in the first half and finished the game at 27.3 percent from the field, its second-worst shooting performance of the season (27.1 percent against Wisconsin). The Cardinal was 2-of-8 on three-point field goal attempts in the contest.
Freshman Bryce Wills scored 11 of his team-high 13 points in the second half, including six in the first three minutes, as the Cardinal tried to make a run to get back into it.
Stanford cut it to seven (38-31) with 15:23 to play on a KZ Okpala 3-pointer from the top of the key.
Oregon (15-9, 6-5) responded, however, scoring the next eight points to rebuild a double digit advantage. Stanford could not get any closer the rest of the way.
Okpala finished with 10 points on the night for his 18th double-digit scoring performance of the season.
Stanford returns home to face USC on Wednesday at 8 p.m.
