Alex Moretti scored twice to help the Sacred Heart Prep boys’ soccer team inch closer to the West Bay Athletic League title, beating The King’s Academy 5-0 on Senior Day.
Friday’s victory gives the Gators (15-0-2, 9-0-1) a chance to clinch at least a title tie when they travel to meet Harker (13-3, 8-2) for a 3 p.m. contest Monday.
The Eagles beat Eastside Prep 4-2 on Thursday while Priory topped Crystal Springs Uplands 3-1 in other WBAL games.
Sacred Heart Prep moved three points clear of idle second-place Menlo (14-2-2, 8-1-1), which hosts Eastside (4-10-2, 2-7-1) at 2:45 p.m. Monday. Priory (7-8, 5-6) plays at The King’s Academy.
The Gators recorded their fifth consecutive shutout and 11th on the season. SHP has outscored opponents 21-0 since beating Harker 4-2 on Jan. 23. The Gators have allowed three goals during conference play. Harker has outscored its league foes by a 35-10 margin.
Tommy Hogan added a goal and assist for SHP. John Carrington and Brian Tinsley also scored wile Liam Johnson and Alexi Stavropoulos each added an assist.
Girls basketball
It took nearly a month but Menlo-Atherton finally earned a 50-39 victory over host Mills in a Peninsula Athletic League contest Thursday.
In the last episode, the Bears (13-10, 8-3) were leading by nine points when a leaky roof during a storm on Jan. 16 forced a halt to the game with 2:52 remaining to play in the third quarter.
In a thrilling conclusion, with both teams very much playing for a better Central Coast Section tournament seed and possible inclusion in Monday’s PAL tournament, M-A kept the heat on with Linnea Lindblom scoring 14 points and Nicolette Yeh adding 12.
M-A comes back Friday to play visiting Woodside in the regular-season finale at 6:15 p.m.
In the West Bay Athletic League, Castilleja downed host Mercy San Francisco, 56-50, on Thursday to move into a first place tie with the Skippers with one game remaining to play for both teams.
The Gators (12-9, 7-2) play Mercy Burlingame at Serra High at 6 p.m. Tuesday while Mercy SF (12-10, 7-2) hosts Harker at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday.
Niki Chen scored 19 points for Castilleja, which included four 3-pointers. Sammy Wong scored all her points on three 3-pointers. Katie Fearon added nine points.
Boys basketball
Matt Ward scored 27 points and Mid-Peninsula beat San Francisco Christian, 54-27, on Thursday at Pacific Bay Christian in Pacifica in a Private Schools Athletic League North Division contest.
Josh King added 11 points for the Dragons (4-14, 3-8), who play Design Tech at the Oracle Gym in Redwood City at 5:30 p.m. Friday.
Girls soccer
Woodside lost at Carlmont 2-1 in a PAL contest Thursday. The Wildcats (8-8-3, 3-4-2) host Burlingame at 4:30 p.m. Tuesday.
Menlo-Atherton scored a goal in the second half to tie host Burlingame, 1-1, in another PAL game.
The Bears (6-8-4, 4-2-3) and Panthers enter the final game of the regular season tied for first. M-A hosts Terra Nova (6-4-7, 3-3-3) at 4:30 p.m. Tuesday. TN is unbeaten in its last five matches after knocking Aragon out of a share of first on Thursday.
