Cornerback Paulson Adebo was named to the Freshman All-America team by the Football Writers Association of American on Monday.

In his first year of action, the Mansfield, Texas, native led the country with a school-record 24 passes defended (four interceptions). He also set the school standard and was No. 2 in the country with 20 pass breakups in 2018.

Adebo, who was third on the team with 64 tackles, is the first Cardinal to earn freshman All-America honors from the FWAA since offensive lineman David DeCastro in 2009. DeCastro just finished his seventh season in the NFL with the Pittsburgh Steelers.

Adebo and the Cardinal finished 9-4 in 2018, including a 14-13 win over Pitt in the Sun Bowl. It was Stanford’s school-record 10th consecutive bowl game.

In related news, Stanford grad Blake Martinez is a finalist for the VIZIO Top Value Performer (TVP) trophy, given to the NFL player who’s on-field performance most exceeds the value of his contract.

In his third season, Martinez is making a case as one of the best linebackers in the league. With a knack for being around the ball and making plays, Martinez continues to lead the much-improved Green Bay defense. With multiple games of 10 or more tackles, Martinez eclipsed 100 total tackles. Martinez, a fourth-round draft pick, has a base salary of just $630,000.

Fans decide the winner of the award through online voting at VIZIO/TVP through Jan. 20.
