The Stanford football team learned Sunday it is headed to the Hyundai Sun Bowl in El Paso, Texas, to be played on Dec. 31 at 11 a.m. The Cardinal (8-4) will face Pittsburgh (7-6) for the first time in over 86 years. Stanford is playing in its 10th consecutive bowl game, an on-going school record.
The Cardinal downed California, 23-13, in Saturday’s Big Game to improve its bowl game prospects. The Golden Bears (7-5) will meet TCU in the Cheez-It Bowl on Dec. 26.
Stanford has made 29 previous bowl appearances, four of them to the Sun Bowl. The Cardinal is 14-14-1 in bowl games, and 3-1 in the Sun Bowl, most recently defeating North Carolina, 25-23, in 2016. This will be Stanford’s third straight bowl game in the state of Texas, including the 2017 Alamo Bowl.
Stanford is 1-2 all-time against Pitt, including a 7-6 win over the Panthers in the 1928 Rose Bowl Game. Pitt won the first meeting in California, 16-7, on Dec. 30, 1922, and the most recent meeting, 7-0, on Nov. 26, 1932, in the Steel City.
