Incoming Stanford freshman Brandon Dieter hit a home run and then pitched the ninth to pick up the save as the Pacific Union Capitalists beat visiting Utah Marshalls 7-6 on Monday in a nonconference college summer baseball game at Palo Alto High.

Utah picked up an unearned run in the top of the ninth in the completion of Sunday’s suspended game to win, 6-5.

Kyle Velasquez also homered and drove in a pair of runs for the Caps in Monday’s regularly scheduled game.

The Caps (10-10) host the Healdsburg Prune Packers at Paly on Tuesday at 5 p.m.

PUF scored three runs in the bottom of the first to erase an early deficit. Palo Alto grad Max Jung-Goldberg singled and Austin Wells walked to open the inning. Tanner Carlson doubled home Jung-Goldberg and Holgate singled in two runs.

Dieter hit a home run to lead off the fourth and Jung-Goldberg singled in another run to make it 5-2.

After Utah drew within 5-4 in the seventh, Velasquez hit a two-run homer in the eighth.

In the suspended game, the Marshalls scored the go-ahead run when Arizona-bound Ryan Archibald tripled and scored on a passed ball.

The Caps tied the game when Juan Gonzalez singled home a pair of runs in the bottom of the eighth. Gonzalez also doubled home a pair of runs in the sixth.

Incoming Stanford freshman Austin Kretzschmar singled home a run in the sixth for Utah. Dieter, who will be joining Kretzchmar at Stanford, collected two hits.
