The temperature topped 100 degrees at Ford Field on Saturday, but the only thing sizzling about Sam Boyd was his bat.
Boyd had a double and a single and scored two runs, and teammate Brent Valentine connected for a three-run home run in the fifth inning, as Guy Plumbing beat Peak Performance, 10-3, in the championship game of the Alpine-West Menlo Majors Playoffs.
Boyd, hitting in the No. 10 spot (The Alpine league employs a continuous batting order), beat out a nice bunt single to help load the bases in the third. Casey Parker (hitting ninth), Nick Low (11th) and Jackson Coleman also had singles, and Valentine had a double in the three-run rally.
Peak had gone ahead 3-0 in the top of the third on singles by Justin Belardo, Kai Kapor, Finn Downey, and Jackson Harding.
Guy Plumbing scored the eventual winning run in the fourth when Will Marenghi reached on an error, and later scored on a passed ball. Max Mueller also had a two-run single in the inning.
Valentine’s three-run homer — a deep shot to center in the fifth — made the game a runaway.
“Sam has a ton of energy, and the other kids feed off that,” said Guy Plumbing manager Matt Marenghi, whose team finished 16-2 in the regular season. “He’s always the first player to dive for a ball in practice, and play like it’s the biggest game of his life.”
And how does Boyd celebrate a league championship on a 100-degree day? Pool party?
Nope — he doesn’t have a pool.
“I’m going to go home and climb into the freezer,” Boyd said. “It’s a small freezer, so I’ll just squeeze in.”
Other members of Guy Plumbing are Jack Scarborough, Patrick Boyd, Cullen Dearing, Isaac Hutchinson, and Walker Low. The assistant coach is Michael Valentine.
