Stanford graduate student Eric Fomba was selected as Pac-12 Conference Men’s Tennis Player of the Week. Fomba helped lead Stanford to a 4-0 week with victories over No. 20 Arizona State, Arizona, Air Force and Army.

His heroics in the Pac-12 opener at No. 20 Arizona State lifted the Cardinal to a key road win. With the match against the Sun Devils tied at 3-3, Fomba’s match at No. 4 singles decided the winner.

After capturing the first set against ASU’s Tim Ruehl, he dropped the second set in a tiebreaker, 6-7 (7). Fomba fell behind, 5-2, in the final set. One game from defeat, the Cardinal graduate student battled back to win the next five games to capture the victory and seal the 4-3 team win.

Stanford went on to earn a 4-0 win at Arizona on Friday and returned home to record victories over Air Force (4-0) and Army (7-0) on Sunday. In the win over Army, Fomba and teammate Sam Turchetta clinched the doubles point with a 6-1 win at the No. 3 spot.

It’s the second Pac-12 Player of the Week honor for a Cardinal this season. Senior Tom Fawcett was named the conference player of the week on Feb. 6 after wins over No. 5 USC and No. 6 UCLA in the Dick Gould Stanford/SoCal Challenge.

Stanford, 14-1 and ranked No. 2 in the latest Oracle/ITA Collegiate Tennis rankings released on Tuesday, will next play on March 27 against Pacific at Taube Family Tennis Stadium.
