Kathryn Plummer had 13 kills on a hitting percentage of .545 and the second-ranked Stanford women’s volleyball team swept host No. 16 Oregon on Friday in front of 5,872 fans in Matthew Knight Arena. The crowd was the second-largest for a women’s volleyball match since the arena opened in 2011.
With Arizona knocking off visiting USC (12-4, 4-1) in straight sets, the Cardinal (12-2, 5-0) take over sole possession of first place in the Pac-12 Conference.
Stanford travels to Oregon State for a 1 p.m. game Sunday, to be televised on Pac-12 Networks.
The Beavers (11-6, 1-4) swept Cal on Friday and have historically given the Cardinal problems in Corvallis.
Stanford hit .337 as a team, while holding Oregon to a .198 clip. Each set was close throughout as there were 33 tie scores and nine lead changes in the match.
Plummer, who leads the Pac-12 in kills and points per set, led all players and had a single error in 22 total attacks. Sophomore Audriana Fitzmorris added 10 kills on .444 hitting and three blocks.
Sophomore setter Jenna Gray finished with 36 assists and two aces, while sophomore libero Morgan Hentz collected eight digs.
Redshirt senior opposite Merete Lutz recorded eight kills and junior middle blocker Tami Alade had seven kills on .500 hitting and six blocks. Both Alade (.569) and Fitzmorris (.510) are hitting above .500 in Pac-12 matches.
Women’s tennis
Stanford’s Melissa Lord moved into the semifinal round of the singles consolation round of ITA All-American Championships with a victory on Friday at the Rivera Tennis Club in Pacific Palisades.
The third-seeded Lord is scheduled to play unseeded Anastasia Rychagova of Kansas at 10 a.m. Saturday.
Lord beat Virginia’s Rosie Johnson, 6-4, 1-6, 6-1, on Friday. She’s the only seeded player in the semifinals.
That’s also the case in the main draw, where Texas Tech’s Gabriela Talaba survived as the No. 2 seed.
Men’s tennis
The Stanford doubles team of Sameer Kumar and Michael Genender posted a straight set victory Friday to reach the quarterfinals of the consolation bracket at the ITA All-American Championships in Tulsa.
Kumar and Genender defeated the 11th-ranked doubles team of Fabian Fallert and Grey Hamilton of Mississippi in the consolation bracket, following Thursday’s main draw loss.
The duo advances to Saturday’s consolation quarterfinal matchup on Saturday with North Florida’s Jefta Kecic and Lasse Muscheites, ranked No. 23 nationally.
