Henry Saul and Sam Craig finished first and second and the Palo Alto boys cross country equaled Los Altos with 66 points at the SCVAL Meet No. 1 in Santa Clara’s Central Park on Tuesday.
Gunn’s Joyce Shea won the individual race but Julia Doubson, Miranda Jimenez and Kai Douglas each finished among the top 10 to help Palo Alto win the 2.3-mile race with 69 points, ahead of Lynbrook’s 79. Gunn’s Sophie Alexis finished eighth for Gunn, which was fifth as a team.
The Vikings top four runners were among the top 14 while the Eagles had six runners among the top 33.
Saul won the race with a time of 11:40.2, followed by Craig in 11:47.2. Reed Foster ran 12:07.0 to finish seventh for Palo Alto and Donald Taggart was 14th in 12:21.1.
Noah Kuehn was Gunn’s top runner with a time of 13:19.8.
On the girls side, Shea raced 13:58.6, the only under 14:00 runner. Doubson ran second in 14:02.7,
Jimenez was fifth in 14:27.9 and Douglas ninth in 14:45.9. Freshman Grechen Berndt was 20th in 15:18.1.
Girls golf
The West Bay Athletic League CCS qualifying tournament in late October figures to grab people’s attention as it appears likely that that the same three teams that battled for the tournament last year, Menlo School, Harker and Castilleja, will be doing so again.
Harker edged Menlo, 186-192, Tuesday at Los Lagos Golf Club, forcing a three-way tie for first place. Harker, Menlo and Castilleja are all 6-1 in league competition entering the final month of action.
Menlo and Harker, which each shot season bests, have split their matches this season, while Castilleja’s lone loss is to Harker. In all three matches, both teams shot under 200.
Senior Sophie Siminoff earned medalist honors, shooting a 35 which included back-to-back birdies on holes three and four. Sophomore Vikki Xu was next with a solid 37, which included six pars despite the windy conditions.
Menlo’s team total was rounded out with sophomores Gianna Inguagiato and Sulwen Ma carding 40s. Freshmen Vivian Herr shot a solid round of 40, which included a birdie on No. 2 and four pars. Marena Herr finished with a 48 which was highlighted by an awesome birdie on No. 8 and a solid par on No. 9.
The Knights will resume play with a marathon week, beginning Monday against The King’s Academy at Sunnyvale Muni, Tuesday at Peninsula G & CC vs. Notre Dame Belmont and Wednesday at SJ Muni vs. NDSJ.
Girls volleyball
Menlo swamped visiting Notre Dame-San Jose, 25-5, 25-16, 25-8, in a WBAL contest Tuesday night as Kristin Sellers recorded a match-high 15 kills. Grace King and Ashley Dreyer combined for another 17 kills while Caroline Bradley recorded 10 digs.
The Knights (16-3, 4-0) host Mercy-Burlingame next Tuesday at 6:30 p.m.
In the SCVAL, Palo Alto (12-3, 5-0) downed host Los Altos 10-7, 2-2), 25-20, 25-22, 18-25, 16-25, 15-8. The Vikings visit Monta Vista for a league match Thursday at 6:45 p.m.
Gunn (7-12, 3-2) dropped a 25-11, 25-17, 25-14 decision to host Mountain View (12-6, 4-0) and hosts Milpitas at 6:45 p;.m. Thursday.
In the PAL Bay Division, Menlo-Atherton topped host San Mateo, 25-23, 25-14, 25-19. The Bears (5-8, 3-2) travel to Burlingame for a match at 6:15 p.m. Thursday.
In the WBAL El Camino Division, Crystal Springs Uplands edged Eastside College Prep, 25-8, 25-14, 25-14.
Girls tennis
Menlo-Atherton beat San Mateo, 6-1, in a PAL match. Palo Alto lost, 5-2, to Monta Vista in a SCVAL match. Rachel Owens won her singles match for the Vikings.
Boys water polo
Gunn topped host Los Gatos, 12-2, in a SCVAL match Tuesday. The Titans (6-5, 5-2) travel to Harker for a 6:45 p.m. match Thursday.
Palo Alto beat Lynbrook, 10-7, in a SCVAL match. The Vikings (5-6, 4-3) host Los Altos at 6:45 p.m. Thursday.
Girls water polo
Palo Alto (7-9, 1-4) hosts Los Altos at 3:30 p.m. Thursday.
