Senior Natalie Zimits scored 16 points and freshman Charlotte Levison added 12 in leading the Sacred Heart Prep girls’ basketball team to a 56-27 victory over Westmoor in the championship game of The King’s Academy tournament in Sunnyvale on Saturday.
Levison, who scored 22 points in Friday’s win over San Mateo and averaged 14 points a game, was named the tournament MVP and Zimits joined her on the all-tournament team.
The Gators (4-1), defending Central Coast Section Division IV champions, host the Bearcats on Saturday at 4:30 p.m.
Sacred Heart Prep took control of its game against the Rams (5-2) early, opening leads of 15-6 after the first quarter and 33-15 by halftime. The Gators held Westmoor scoreless in the fourth quarter.
In a consolation game, Leigh topped Castilleja, 49-30. The Gators (4-3) play again at the Urban School at 6 p.m. on Dec. 22.
At the Elite Showcase at Laney College on Saturday, Eastside Prep dropped a heart-breaker to defending Division IV state champion Cardinal Newman, 48-46.
The Panthers (4-3) rallied from a halftime deficit to take a lead into the final quarter before the Cardinals (4-1) came back to win.
Zion Gabriel scored 21 points, including a trio of 3-pointers, on 9-of-15 shooting to lead Eastside, which travels to St. Mary’s in Albany a week from Monday for a 7 p.m. tipoff. Kayla Tahaafe added 10 points, five rebounds and a team-high three assists. Mina Tameilau grabbed nine rebounds.
Ofa Sili and Greer Hoyem combined to score eight of the first 13 points and Menlo-Atherton ran away from host Washington, 47-29, in a nonleague game Saturday.
The Bears (4-1) outscored Washington, 22-4, in the third quarter to turn an 18-11 halftime edge into a 40-15 advantage. Hoyem led all scorers with 14 points. Mele Kailahi and Erica Fischer combined for another 15 points.
M-A plays at Menlo School on Friday at 6:15 p.m.
Pinewood dropped a 62-49 nonleague decision to host Bishop O’Dowd on Saturday. The Panthers (4-2) went on a 12-2 run during the third quarter to close within 44-36 at one point.
Pinewood plays Westmoor a week from Monday at 4:30 p.m. to open the Terra Nova tournament.
In another tournament game, Priory (3-2) defeated Aspire Langston Hughes Academy, 55-13, in the consolation bracket of the RLS tourney.
Wrestling
Gunn High opened its season with three victories at the “10th Annual Gunn Quad,” beating Salinas, 66-18, Pioneer, 60-19, and Serra, 51-22.
The Titans came through for the 10th consecutive year with a Quad victory. Unfortunately, Gunn senior and team leader David Abramovitch (132) was brought down early in his final match versus Serra’s Kyle Wilson and sustained a broken clavicle. Although he finished his match, he will be out for the next month.
This marks the second consecutive weekend that a starter has sustained an injury that will keep him out for a prolonged period.
“If there are any bright spots with these two rather serious injuries, it is that we now have some time to recover,” Titans coach Chris Horpel said. “Both Abramovitch and Suzuki should both be back for most of the season.”
Several Gunn wrestlers turned in undefeated performances for the weekend: sophomore Tim Weymouth (145), juniors Travis Haro (120), Eric Wei (126), and Alex Feghhi (182) and seniors Ido Enav (138), Ray Wu (145), Thomas Chang-Davidson (170) and Mark Lassen (220).
At the Webber Lawson Tournament, Palo Alto 138-pounder Seth Goyal went 5-0 and captured the title of his division.
Goyal recorded a technical fall, three pins and then beat Prospect’s Mike Amaro, 8-5, in the title match.
Andrew Wang finished fifth at 126 and Ben Bernstein was seventh at 132 pounds.
Menlo-Atherton’s Nicholas Ozden (182) and Nicholas Wrong (152) each recorded a pair of pins in their respective divisions.
Boys basketball
Gunn fell behind early and then rallied to beat visiting Hillsdale, 51-44, in a nonleague game Saturday. The Titans (5-2) play at Prospect on Wednesday.
Pinewood (5-3) surprised host Cloverdale (5-1), 57-52, Saturday. The Panthers host Thomas More at 5:30 p.m. Saturday.
Menlo-Atherton (2-2) lost at Bellarmine, 65-45, Saturday. The Bears play at Menlo School at 7:45 p.m. Friday.
Boys soccer
Sacred Heart Prep went 1-0-1 on a trip to the coast over the weekend, beating host Aptos, 4-0, on Friday and tying host Carmel, 1-1, on Saturday.
Peter Love converted a penalty kick in each game to help the Gators (2-0-1) unbeaten. He also had an assist on Friday.
Stefan Schlotter scored twice against the Mariners. Mark Bostros also scored for Sacred Heart Prep, which plays St. Mary’s-Albany Friday at 4 p.m. as part of the De La Salle Showcase at Ygnacio Valley High.
Gunn beat Monta Vista, 4-1, as part of the Homestead Christmas Cup. The Titans (3-2-1) return to action Jan. 3 with a home match against Wilcox.
Palo Alto (3-1) has a home match against Sequoia at 3:30 p.m. Monday.
Girls soccer
Mia Shenk scored four times and Sacred Heart Prep downed Carlmont, 4-1, at the Firebird Classic at Fremont-Sunnyvale on Saturday.
Lindsey Johnson added a pair of assists for the Gators (3-1), who host Sequoia at 3:30 p.m. Friday.
San Mateo beat Castilleja (2-4), 7-0, in another tournament match.
Menlo bettered St. Ignatius, 2-1. The Knights (2-1-1) next play at Menlo-Atherton on Jan. 6 at 3:30 p.m.
Sofia Bernal scored twice and Catherine Paulson had two assists and St. Francis (3-1) beat Santa Teresa, 4-0, at the Firebird Classic.
