Senior team captain Connor Johnston scored in the second half and the Sacred Heart Prep boys soccer team beat host Mountain View, 1-0, in the season opener for both teams Tuesday.

The Gators, who lost their opener to the Spartans last year by the same score, are looking to return to the CCS playoffs after missing it last season despite a 6-2-1 mark over their final eight games.

Johnston was an all-league forward as a sophomore when Sacred Heart Prep surprised people by reaching the CCS Division III title match in 2015.

The Gators travel to Pioneer for a game at 5:30 p.m. on Thursday.

Johnston scored with an assist from freshman Liam Johnson.

Palo Alto dropped visiting Milpitas, 9-0, as Yahli Malchin recorded a goal and an assist.

The Vikings (1-0) host Carlmont on Wednesday at 3:30 p.m.

Girls basketball

Sode Smith scored 14 points, one of four players in double figures, and Sacred Heart Prep opened its season with a 64-36 victory over visiting El Camino in a nonleague game Tuesday night.

Grace Battles added 13 points for the Gators, who host Lincoln in a nonleague game next Tuesday at 6:30 p.m. Charlotte Levision scored 12 and Natalie Zimits, just off the volleyball court, added 10 points.

Smith and Levison each hit a pair of 3-pointers as Sacred Heart Prep overwhelmed the Colts in the second quarter and took 33-17 led into halftime.

Freshman Samantha Wong was a bright spot for Castilleja, scoring a game-high 19 points in a 69-49 loss to Carlmont as part of the Fremont tournament.

Wong made a trio of 3-pointers for the Gators, who are scheduled to meet host Fremont at 3:30 p.m. Wednesday. Cate Adler added 13 points.

Girls soccer

Gunn dropped a 9-0 decision to visiting Mountain View in its season opener Tuesday. The Spartans finished last year 19-1-2, its only loss to Woodside, 1-0, in the CCS Open Division championship game.

The Titans (10-8-1 last year) reached the first round of the CCS Division I playoffs out of the SCVAL El Camino Division.

Gunn hosts Palo Alto at 6 p.m. Thursday. The Vikings dropped its only match of the year in the CCS Open Division playoffs and opened their season with a 3-0 victory over Woodside on Monday night.

Pinewood lost at home, 5-2, to Cupertino in a nonleague game. The Panthers (0-1) led at the break, 2-1, but the Pioneers (2-0) took over in the second half.

Pinewood travels to Gunderson for a 3:15 p.m. nonleague contest Thursday.

Olivia Watson scored, with an assist from Georgia Nieh, in Castilleja’s season-opening 7-1 loss to host Homestead. The Gators are slated to travel to KIPP Collegiate for a nonleague game Thursday at 3:30 p.m.

Eastside Prep slipped at KIPP Collegiate, 2-1, in a nonleague match. The Panthers (0-1) meet Summit Prep at 7:30 p.m. Friday at Woodside High.

Boys basketball

Eastside Prep dropped a 40-29 decision to host Westmoor in a nonleague game Tuesday. The Panthers (1-2) host Summit Prep at 5 p.m. Thursday.
