Thick black smoke that can be seen throughout the Bay Area this afternoon is coming from a massive two-alarm structure fire in an industrial area of Newark, according to an Alameda County fire official.

Crews are battling the blaze in the 6500 block of Smith Avenue, Alameda County fire spokeswoman Aisha Knowles said.

The National Weather Service San Francisco Bay Area tweeted that the fire can be seen from space.

Department of Public Safety officers said wind was pushing smoke from the fire toward Sunnyvale around 4 p.m. They advised anyone sensitive to smoke who is outside and downwind to avoid long-term exposure.

Police are evacuating businesses immediately surrounding the area. No homes are being evacuated.

Firefighters from Hayward and Fremont are also responding.
