Menlo College women’s wrestling has added another highly touted freshman into the mix for the 2016-17 season with the recent signing of Southern California standout Marilyn Garcia.
During her four years on the mats for Birmingham Community Charter High, Garcia twice claimed a LA City Section Championships and finished second at the 2016 CIF State Meet as a senior in the 143-pound weight class, helping her team score 85 points and finish fifth.
On top of that, the highly decorated incoming freshman placed first in the CAUSA Folkstyle State tournament and second in the Freestyle tournament both at 139 pounds. She also claimed an impressive seventh place at USAW Folkstyle Nationals at 139 pounds to cap off a stellar 2016 season.
“I’m very excited to be joining Menlo College Women’s Wrestling,” said Garcia. “I want to contribute to the growth of the program and I am looking forward to improving as a wrestler and as student at Menlo College.”
Women’s basketball
Menlo head coach Shannon Osborne has announced the signing of the second junior transfer of the 2016-17 recruiting class — Sierra College standout Ashlyn Monk.
A native of Citrus Heights, Monk is a 5-6 guard who appeared in 33 games for Sierra in 2015-16, shooting 41 percent from the field — 37 percent from 3-point range. She was a part of a Sierra team that won the Big 8 Conference a season ago.
Prior to her collegiate career, Monk was a three-year starter for Del Campo High, where she led the team in scoring as a senior by averaging 11.1 points per game. She was named an all-conference player for her efforts as a senior and also earned the school’s Scholar-Athlete Award.
Monk earned a place on the President’s Honor Award list five different times during her prep career.
Track and field
Menlo freshman Elijah Noel was one of just six freshman to qualify and compete in the long jump at the NAIA Track& Field Championships over the weekend in Gulf Shores, Ala.
Noel, who qualified for the event with a jump of 23-10, did not improve upon his season best at nationals but did record a leap of 22-2 1/2 for 21st place overall.
