The 11th-ranked Stanford women’s golf team led from start to finish to capture its third victory of the season Tuesday at the Silverado Showdown at Silverado Resort and Spa in Napa.
Four Cardinal golfers finished 14th or higher, as the squad combined for a 54-hole score of 1-over par 865 to beat defending champion Oregon by 13 strokes in the 18-team event.
“We got contributions from everyone,” said Anne Walker, Stanford’s Director of Women’s Golf.
At the awards ceremony, Walker paid tribute to senior All-Americans Lauren Kim and Mariah Stackhouse, who played in their final regular season tournaments. They have sparked Stanford to 12 team victories during their time on The Farm.
“This is really a special moment for the women’s program,” Walker said. “It was a fitting end for them to be remembered that way.”
Stackhouse has collected 27 top 10 finishes, while Kim has 21.
“Fantastic careers,” said Walker. “And they’re not done.”
Kim paced the Cardinal at Silverado by placing second individually, her team-leading fifth top 10 of the season and 21st at Stanford. She posted rounds of 70-69-73 to conclude at 4-under 212, one stroke behind winner Cathleen Santoso of Oregon.
The Cardinal also received top 20 performances from junior Casey Danielson, Stackhouse and sophomore Shannon Aubert.
Danielson shot 72-69-73 to secure fourth at 2-under 214, while Stackhouse (72-72-76) and Aubert (73-75-72) tied for 14th at 4-over 220.
It was the third top 10 of the season for Danielson, who like Stackhouse, made a final-round eagle. Stackhouse earned her fourth-straight top 16 showing and sixth top 20 of the season, and Aubert now has four top 20 finishes.
“I’m really pleased with Casey,” Walker said. “She’s worked very hard and had a chance to win at the end. She was huge for us.”
Junior Quirine Eijkenboom (72-84-76) tied for 63rd at 16-over 232. Freshman Sierra Kersten (73-75-73), competing as an individual in only her second collegiate tournament, tied for 18th at 5-over 221.
Stanford produced four eagles at Silverado, with Aubert and Kersten joining in.
“Pretty cool,” said Walker. “You don’t see many.”
Next up for Stanford is the Pac-12 Championships, April 18-20 at Ruby Hill Golf Club in Pleasanton.
Baseball
One strike away from losing, freshman Brandon Wulff punched a single up the middle to tie the game and senior Jonny Locher followed with a two-run homer in the top of the ninth inning to lead the Stanford baseball team past host California, 8-6, in a nonconference game Tuesday night.
Colton Hock recorded the final four outs to gain the win as the Cardinal (15-8) won its third straight entering Thursday’s Pac-12 series opener at UCLA.
Matt Winaker doubled leading off the ninth and was still on second two outs later. Wulff fell behind 0-2 and then singled in Winaker. Locher, who entered the game as a pinch hitter, then drilled a home run.
Nico Hoerner, Quinn Brodey and Locher each drove in a pair of runs for Stanford. Brodey had three hits and Menlo School grad Mikey Diekroeger joined Edman and Wulff with two hits apiece.
It marked Stanford’s third straight win over Cal (18-9) dating back to last season, snapped the Bears seven-game win streak, and gave the Cardinal its sixth win over a Top 25 opponent this season.
Beach volleyball
Stanford dropped an exciting, 3-2, match to visiting California on Tuesday.
“There were a lot of competitive three-set matches which brought out the best in both teams,” said Cardinal coach Denise Corlett. “As a team, this is the best we have played all season, and we will look to continue that this weekend.”
The Cardinal returns to action this weekend, hosting Arizona State, Oregon, Boise State, Saint Mary’s and Cal in a dual match tournament.
On Saturday, Stanford will face Boise State at Noon followed by a 3 p.m. matinee with Arizona State. The Cardinal faces Oregon at 11:30 a.m. and Saint Mary’s at 2:30 p.m. on Sunday.
Courtney Bowen and Jennifer DiSanto put Stanford on the board first, winning the number four match, 21-16, 21-17, in what would be the only two-setter of the dual.
California equalized with Tami Alade and Karina Robinson, Stanford’s number five pair, losing their match, 21-17, 16-21, 15-9.
Merete Lutz and Halland McKenna gave Stanford a 2-1 advantage with a 21-17, 10-21, 15-10 win in the number three match.
California took the number one match, with Hayley Hodson and Payton Chang surrendering their first loss of the season as a pair, 14-21, 21-17, 15-13.
The dual was decided by the number two match, with Ivana Vanjak and Catherine Raquel representing the Cardinal.
Stanford and Cal went back and forth until the Golden Bears clinched the dual with an 18-16 win in the deciding third set.
