Despite Connor Schram’s early upset of Ronnie Bresser in a back-and-forth dual, No. 18 Stanford (19-3, 2-2 Pac-12) fell to Oregon State (7-5, 1-2 Pac-12), 21-13, Thursday evening at Burnham Pavilion.
Down 13-12 with a trio of bouts remaining, the Beavers took three consecutive decisions to upend the Cardinal.
Schram, ranked 17th nationally at 125 pounds, surrendered an early takedown to No. 6 Bresser, and battled back to tie the bout at 2 heading into the final period.
Bresser recorded an escape early in the third to take a 3-2 lead, and appeared poised to take the victory as the clock ticked down past 30 seconds.
But Schram stayed aggressive, and took control with 15 seconds remaining, eventually earning a takedown with four seconds left to secure the win. The redshirt sophomore moves to 15-4 on the season, and is 1-1 against top-10 opponents.
Joey Palmer evened the dual with a 6-2 victory over Mason Pengillyat 133 pounds, but Joey McKenna put the Cardinal back on top with major decision against Jack Hathaway.
McKenna took control midway through the third period with four nearfall points and recorded a late takedown to finish off his opponent 10-1.
Oregon State, which has won four consecutive Pac-12 crowns, won at 149 and 157 pounds to go up 12-7. Stanford, though, fought hard on its home mat, and went back in front thanks to consecutive decision victories from Jim Wilson and Peter Galli at 165 and 174 pounds, respectively.
OSU’s Seth Thomas gave Wilson all he could handle, but the Stanford redshirt junior, ranked 18th in the country at 165, took Thomas down with 50 seconds left to break a 5-5 tie, and hung on for a 7-6 win.
Galli, who has notched nearly half of his 35 career victories this season, slammed Tyler Chay to the floor several times en route to a 8-5 decision.
Corey Griego shut out Garet Krohn 7-0 at 184 pounds to put his team up 15-13. OSU cemented its lead thanks to Cody Crawford’s 11-7 decision win over Zach Nevills, who fought valiantly wrestling up a weight.
In the final dual of the night, No. 20 Nathan Butler looked for his second straight victory over a top-10 opponent against the Beavers’ Amarveer Dhesi but went down early and never recovered, losing 8-6.
Stanford hits the road this weekend to take on Air Force on Saturday at noon.
