Rosco Allen scored 20 of his 25 points in the second half, though the Stanford men’s basketball team could never mount a comeback, losing to host Colorado, 91-75, in a Pac-12 Conference contest Wednesday night.
The Cardinal (11-8, 4-4 Pac-12) gets a couple of days off before traveling to meet host Utah at 2 p.m. Saturday.
Marcus Sheffield added 12 points and Marcus Allen had 10 for Stanford, which lost its sixth straight to the Buffaloes.
It didn’t help that the Cardinal shot under 30 percent (10-of-34), including a 1-of-10 effort from 3-point land during a miserable first half that saw Colorado (16-5, 5-3) shoot 44.4 percent from the field, including over 6 percent from long range.
The Buffaloes were even better in the second half. Stanford was able to draw within 42-28 at halftime after trailing by as many as 18 points with just over six minutes left in the first half.
Rosco Allen hit Stanford’s first 3-pointer with 51 seconds left in the half and the Cardinal recorded eight offensive rebounds in the final five minutes of the half.
Colorado took off in the second half, quickly opening a 22-point less than three minutes in.
The Buffaloes led, 64-41, with 12:50 remaining to play when Stanford went on a sustained run, sparked by a 3-pointer from Dorian Pickens.
Sheffield hit a 3-pointer with 9:34 left to being the Cardinal within 64-54, but that was the last hurrah. Colorado rebuilt its lead to 81-58 with 5:51 remaining.
The Buffaloes shot 49.1 percent for the game, 68.4 percent (13-of-19) from long range, and out-rebounded Stanford, 46-38.
With a chance to move into third place, a half-game out of first, the Cardinal fell flat. It doesn’t get much easier for Stanford, which has six road games among its 10 remaining contests.
In six games away from Maples Pavilion, Stanford averages a minus-8.5 in the scoring column. The Cardinal has been outscored by a average of 15 points in its four road losses.
Rosco Allen matched his career-high in points and is 15-of-31 over his past two games after suffering through his worst shooting game of the year against Arizona. He’s scored 20 points or more for the fourth time in six games and the fifth time on the season.
The Cardinal did get some good news Wednesday as Arkansas upset fifth-ranked Texas A&M, 74-71, which helps Stanford’s RPI rating. It was No. 46 heading into the week.
