Saturated soils and wind from the latest winter storm uprooted a large tree, which fell on a home on Embarcadero Road on Friday, Jan. 22.

The large tree, which was situated on the property east of Greer Road on the north side of Embarcadero, teetered onto the home at an unknown hour, uprooting part of the lawn and splintering some of its major limbs as it broke over the roof.

The tree’s core was half eaten by termites and its roots were rotted, Palo Alto Fire Batallion Chief Chris Woodard said. The property had been vacant for about 20 years and no one was injured, he added.

Fire personnel were returning from a drill and spotted the fallen tree at about 3 p.m. A building inspector was at the house to determine the damage, Woodard said. The property owner had not yet been located.
