Jordan Morris, one month removed from leading Stanford to the school’s first NCAA men’s soccer title, was among 23 players called by U.S. Men’s National Team head coach Jurgen Klinsmann for the first training camp of 2016 on Wednesday afternoon.
The camp, which runs from Jan. 11-Feb. 6 in Carson and contains a mix of Senior Team members and a host of players age-eligible for the U-23 MNT, will culminate with friendlies against Iceland on Jan. 31 and Canada on Feb. 5. Both matches will be played at StubHub Center.
On Tuesday, Morris announced plans to forgo his senior season at Stanford and embark on a professional career.
In other soccer news, Stanford freshman Amir Bashti was named by Under-20 Men’s National Team head coach Tab Ramos to the 36-player roster for the first U-20 MNT camp of 2016 in Miami.
On Friday, the U-20s will take on local all-star team CASA and then will face Weston FC of the NPSL. On Jan. 12, the U.S. will play matches with the opponents to be announced. All matches will be held at Barry University.
This crop of U-20s, made-up primarily of players born in 1997, will compete to qualify for the FIFA U-20 World Cup in Korea Republic, which runs from May-June of 2017.
It will be the second stint with the U-20s for Bashti, who also traveled with the team to Serbia in September for the Stevan Vilotic-Cele Tournament. He came on in the 32nd minute of the United States’ 6-1 loss to France in Senta (Sept. 4) and entered a 2-0 victory over Israel in Backa Topola (Sept. 7) in the 78th minute.
Bashti appeared in 21 matches in his freshman season, making one start, scoring four goals and adding two assists.
The San Jose Earthquakes Academy product is also a veteran of three U.S. Under-18 Men’s National Team camps with stops in Bosnia & Herzegovina (April 2015), Marbella, Spain (Dec. 2014) and Carson, California (Oct. 2014).
Stanford men’s soccer won the first national championship in the program’s 102-year history on Dec. 13, defeating Clemson, 4-0, at Sporting Park in Kansas City, Kan.
Football
Stanford sophomore running back Christian McCaffrey and senior defensive Aziz Shittu have been named to The Associated Press 2015 All-Bowl Team for performances in postseason action.
McCaffrey earned a spot for All-Purpose after setting a Rose Bowl record with 368 all-purpose yards in No. 5 Stanford’s 45-16 win over No. 6 Iowa. He rushed for 172 yards on 18 carries and caught four passes for 105 yards, including a 75-yard touchdown. He also scored on a 63-yard punt return.
Shittu earned a spot on the Defensive Line after making 10 tackles — 3 1/2 for loss — and registering 1 1/2 sacks in the romp over Iowa.
Tennis
Stanford sophomore Tom Fawcett was nationally ranked ninth as the Oracle and the Intercollegiate Tennis Association announced the updated Oracle/ITA Collegiate Tennis Rankings for Division I men on Tuesday. The No. 9 ranking is the highest in Fawcett’s career. He earned a No. 20 preseason ranking and closed out the 2015 season No. 35 in the nation.
In addition, three Cardinal teammates also secured spots in the rankings with David Wilczynski at No. 57, Michael Genender No. 61 and Maciek Romanowicz No. 89.
Fawcett, Wilczynski, Genender, Romanowicz and the rest of the No. 20-ranked men’s team will kick off the 2016 dual season with a doubleheader at home on Jan. 13, facing Sacramento State at 10:30 a.m., followed by UC Davis at 3 p.m. at the Taube Family Tennis Center.
The Stanford women, meanwhile, are ranked No. 8 nationally. In singles, junior Taylor Davidson is No. 20 and junior Caroline Doyle is No. 39. In doubles, the two are ranked No. 10 nationally.
