One northbound lane and one southbound lane of Alma Street in Palo Alto is shut down this morning after a contractor hit a water line that provides water for firefighting, a utility spokeswoman said.

The contractor hit the line sometime before 8:30 a.m. in the 1300 block of Alma Street, Palo Alto said Catherine Elvert, communications manager for Palo Alto’s Utilities Department.

Utility officials expect that the lanes will be closed all day, Elvert said.

The closed lanes may impact commuters this evening and utility officials are asking anyone that can to take a different way home to help alleviate congestion, she said.
