Recent Gunn High grad Jenna Campbell had quite a swim season to cap her career. Not only did she qualify for the first-ever CIF State Swimming and Diving Championships, but Campbell came away from her final campaign with six spots on the National Interscholastic Swim Coaches Association (NISCA) High School All-American rankings.
Campbell, who will swim for the University of California this fall, ranked 10th in the nation in the 200-yard freestyle in 1:46.49. She also ranked No. 11 in the 500 free in 4:45.83, was No. 39 in the 100 free in 50.35, No. 58 in the 100 fly in 54.94, ranked No. 73 in the 100 back in 55.76 and No. 92 in the 200 IM in 2:03.04.
For local girls, the highest ranking went to the Palo Alto 200 free relay, which captured the state championship with a school record of 1:33.88 that ranked No. 6 in the nation this season. That team featured sophomore Grace Zhao, junior Kayleigh Svensson, freshman Zoe Lusk and freshman Claire Lin.
Zhao also ranked No. 11 in the 500 free (22.79) and was No. 18 in the country in the 100 breaststroke in 1:01.96.
Castilleja freshman Izzi Henig ranked No. 15 in the country in the 100 free with a sizzling 49.55. She also swam in the state meet.
Four divers also made the All-American team — Palo Alto junior Mimi Lin, Menlo-Atherton senior Talbott Paulsen and her sophomore sister, Mia, plus Gunn junor Vivian Zhou.
In other relays, the Sacred Heart Prep 400 free team of junior Kayla Holman, freshman Matte Snow, sophomore Kathryn Bower and freshman Corrine Charlton ranked No. 71 with a 3:29.53 while Paly’s squad of Zhao, sophomore Elizabeth Wilkinson, Lusk and Lin was 88th in 3:30.11. SHP’s same foursome ranks No. 98 in the 200 free relay with a 1:36.75 season best.
For the local boys, Palo Alto sophomore Alex Liang ranked No. 10 in the nation in the 100 fly in 48.29 and was No. 14 in the 200 IM in 1:47.41, a school record.
Gunn junior Daichi Matsuda was No. 71 in the 100 fly in 49.52 and Palo Alto junior Reed Merritt was named to the All-American diving team.
Palo Alto’s team of junior Daniel Sing, junior Andrew Cho, senior Winston Wang and Liang ranked No. 22 in the country in the 400 free relay with a 3:04.41 effort that ranks No. 2 in school history.
Los Altos speedster Albert Gwo, meanwhile, ranked No. 1 in the nation in the 50 free after winning the state title in 19.90.
