Stanford senior Maggie Steffens scored three times and the United States women’s water polo team defeated Brazil, 16-3, Sunday in the semifinals of the Pan American Games in Toronto, Canada.
Cardinal grads Kiley Neushul and Melissa Seidemann, incoming freshman Makenzie Fischer and Menlo Park resident KK Clark also scored for the Americans, who will meet Canada in Tuesday’s championship contest.
The host Canadians beat Cuba, 13-7, to reach the final match.
The U.S. scored twice in the first three minutes and never trailed in the game. Fischer assisted on the first two goals.
The Americans broke it open, scoring six times in the second quarter, including two from Steffens.
Seidemann added a second goal in the final period.
Sailing
Stanford junior Marion Lepert skippered a U.S. Women’s Windsurfing RS:X to a fourth-place finish in the first of three races scheduled for Sunday at the Pan American Games in Toronto.
The American duo of Stanford grad Helena Scutt and Paris Henken finished second, to Brazil, in the 49erFX opening race.
The final two races of each division have been delayed because of weather and water concerns.
A member of the national team since 2013, Lepert placed third in last year’s European sailing Under-21 championships.
Scutt, 23, returned to sailing at the World Cup this year, her first major appearance since suffering a broke spine and two broke ribs when hit by a boat during the 49erFX world championships in September of 2013.
