Stanford swimmers Lia Neal and Felicia Lee will return from the World University Games in Gwangju, Korea with at least one gold medal apiece. Neal can boast of an event record as well.
Lee earned her gold medal by anchoring the U.S. women’s 400 freestyle relay team during the preliminaries, while Neal swam the first led in the preliminaries and anchored the record-winning effort in the finals.
The American women led from start to finish in the relay, putting together a 3:38.12 to finish three seconds ahead of Japan and Russia.
Abbey Weitzel put the USA in front and Shannon Vreeland and Madeline Locus kept it that way for Neal, who finished strong.
The U.S. swept all three gold medals up for grabs Saturday at the Nambu University International Aquatics Center.
Sarah Henry, who won the NCAA 400-yard individual medley title for Texas A&M in March, won the 400-meter individual medley in a lifetime-best 4:38.88. The men won their 400 freestyle relay.
Georgia’s Hali Flickinger earned the bronze medal in the IM with a time of 4:40.54.
“It means everything; it doesn’t get any better than that,” said Henry. “I hope when everyone wakes up in the morning, they’re going to check (the results) and be happy. It’ll be a great gift for them.”
In relay action, the men’s squad of Matt Ellis, Michael Wynalda, Jack Conger and Seth Stubblefield won gold in 3:15.85, ahead of Japan (3:17.98) and Russia (3:18.18).
Men’s gymnastics
Stanford junior Akash Modi is in fourth place among all-around performers after three events.
Cardinal sophomore Ryan Sheppard is in 38th place. He’s competing for Hungary.
Stanford coach Thom Glielmi is an assistant coach for the Americans.
Men’s volleyball
Chinese Taipei downed the USA in three sets. Cardinal Kyle Agostino recorded five digs and three excellent receptions a the libero. Kevin Rakestraw recorded three kills.
