Maya DiRado has been enjoying her free time since graduating from Stanford last December.
“I got engaged so there’s wedding planning,” DiRado said Sunday. “Also napping and eating.”
She became engaged to former Stanford swimmer Rob Andrews, but not even that has taken time away from her swimming.
“I’m happy that I can totally concentrate on swimming,” she said.
DiRado finished second to Hungary’s Katinka Hosszu in the women’s 200 back on Sunday at the Arena Pro Series at the George F. Haines International Swim Center in Santa Clara.
Hosszu, who won five events at the meet, won with a time of 2:07.93.
DiRado, a four-time NCAA champion and 21-time All-American, went 2:08.50, the eighth-best time in the world this year.
“I went to a wedding in Davis on Saturday and didn’t get back until midnight,” DiRado said. “I ended up feeling amazing but I did not expect that time.”
DiRado returns to the world championships, where she earned a gold medal as part of the 800 free relay in 2013 and finished fourth in the 400 IM.
“It’s the biggest meet I’m swam in and it’s a fun met, a fast meet,” DiRado said. “Having been there before helps with the training camp.”
Stanford junior Max Williamson finished fourth in the men’s 200 IM with a time of 2:02.55, two days after finishing second in the 400 IM.
“The great thing about the series is getting to swim against guys who I will see at nationals and Pan Pacs,” Williamson said. “I wanted to be in contact in a really good race.”
Cardinal sophomore Simone Manuel followed her victory in the 50 free with a second-place finish in the 100 free with a time of 54.29. Stanford junior Lia Neal was fifth in 55.15, just ahead of Missy Franklin. Cardinal grad Felicia Lee was 16th overall, going 56.91.
Cardinal senior Sarah Haase finished fifth in the 50 breast, swimming a 31.42. She competed in three championship finals this weekend.
Stanford grad Geoff Cheah, representing Hong Kong, finished eighth in the championship final of the 100 free, swimming a 49.99, while Cardinal grad David Nolan won the ‘B’ final of the 100 free in 50.09.
PASA’s Karlee Bispo, a former Texas All-American placed fifth in the 200 IM in 2:14.82. Sacred Heart Prep grad and Stanford sophomore Ally Howe was 13th in 2:18.00, followed by teammate Grace Carlson in 2:18.48. PASA’s Chloe Isleta was 6th in 2:19.47.
Howe followed the IM with a 16th place finish in the 200 back, swimming a 2:16.14.
Stanford’s Allison Brown was 20th in the 800 free in 9:05.63, Cardinal sophomore Curtis Ogren was 14th in the 200 back in 2:04.30 and PASA’s Grace Zhao was 17th in the 50 breast ion 34.00 and Stanford’s Heidi Poppe was 12th in 33.24.
Stanford’s Christian Brown was 13th in the 50 breast in 28.86, while PASA’s Brandon Fischer was 17th in 29.43.
