An 18-year-old East Palo Alto man died early Sunday morning after his vehicle struck a tree on northbound state Highway 85 in Mountain View, according to the California Highway Patrol.
He has been identified as Joel Godinez-Avila, according to the Santa Clara County Coroner’s office.
The first report of the incident, which happened just south of El Camino Real came in at 5:10 a.m. Godinez-Avila was driving northbound on Highway 85 at an unknown speed when he lost control of his 2013 Toyota and veered to the right and off the roadway. His vehicle collided with a large tree. The Toyota then collided with the sound wall and came to rest on its wheels on the right shoulder highway, according to a CHP report.
Godlinez-Avila sustained fatal injuries as a result of this collision and was pronounced dead upon arrival of emergency personnel. It is unknown at this time if alcohol or drugs were a factor in the collision.
