A Stanford University Ph.D candidate, who pleaded no contest to beating a woman he had been dating, has been sentenced to one year in San Mateo County jail and three years of supervised probation, according to the district attorney’s office.
Yishun Dong, 33, of Mountain View, was also ordered to undergo 104 hours of counseling, perform 30 hours of community service, and pay restitution in an amount to be determined.
The attack took place in Menlo Park on July 19, 2014. He is prohibited from having any contact with the victim, who sustained a facial fracture during the assault that required surgery.
Dong is currently out of custody on a $50,000 bail bond. He is scheduled to surrender on June 13 to begin his jail sentence.
His attorney, John Halley, was not immediately available for comment this morning.
Stanford spokeswoman Lisa Lapin confirmed that Dong is no longer a student at the university.

Not fair to the victim.
If he beat her so intensely her face was fractured, she probably had to have reconstructive facial surgery–or surgeries. Very painful and very emotionally devastating to a young woman.
This guy’s sentence is much too light. If I were the victim, I would ask the judge to reconsider or ask for a different judge. There must be some better recourse for her. Odds are, she will have to suffer the rest of her life.
I am shocked that the perp did not receive 10-25 years in prison. The financial restitution should match the crime as well. This woman’s medical bills must be astronomical, to say nothing of any psychiatry she may require.
Why are criminals who hail from Stanford allowed to get off so easily? This seems to happen with frightening frequency.
