The 16th-ranked Stanford women’s golf team shot a 2-over 286 to finish the first day of action Monday in second place at the Pac-12 Conference Championships in Boulder, Colo.
Oregon leads the 11-team field after an even-par 284, and the Cardinal was one shot better than third-place UCLA with Washington fourth at 5-over.
Casey Danielson and Mariah Stackhouse carded identical rounds of 1-under 70 to lead the reigning league champions at the par-71 Boulder Country Club. The pair are tied for third heading into the second day of the 54-hole event.
“This was a really solid start,” Stanford coach Anne Walker said. “We had a lot of great shots across the board and showed good course management, which helped us avoid big numbers. We had a good practice session after the round and we are excited to get back out on the course tomorrow.”
Stackhouse eagled the 389-yard par-4 first hole to get to 2-under out of the gate. She drained her second shot from 117 yards away and added two more birdies on the back nine. Stackhouse was one of four performers in the field to record an eagle in the opening round.
Danielson was 1-over through six and went on a tear with four birdies on a five-hole stretch midway through her round. She was 3-under through 11, bogeyed the par-5 12th, birdied the par-3 15th and added two more bogeys during the final three holes.
Danielson’s five birdies marked the second-highest total on the day. Stanford totaled 13 as a unit.
Lauren Kim used birdies on holes nine and 10 to aid her round and is tied for 12th at 1-over.
Freshman Shannon Aubert chipped in a 3-over 74 with four birdies to put herself just outside the top 25. Quirine Eijkenboom was 10-over with an 81.
