Garrett Schaner made sure Senior Day was going to be special. One of four seniors honored Sunday, Schaner gave Stanford a lead in a 35-7 victory over visiting San Francisco State in a nonconference wrestling meet.
Schaner propelled the Cardinal to a 6-4 lead when he pinned Dylan Furtado in 2:59 in the 149 bout. He recorded his third pin of the season and improved to 18-12 overall, 8-4 in duals.
Jordan Bryan, Josh Lauderdale, Alex Manley were also honored in a pre-match ceremony.
Junior Dylan Morris registered his 12th win of the year with a commanding 8-1 decision over Calvin Nicholls at 174 pounds.
Redshirt sophomore Zach Nevills increased the Stanford lead with a 14-4 major decision over Johnny Costa at 184 pounds.
Redshirt freshman Garet Krohn picked up an injury default win over Andrew Reggi at 197 pounds. Krohn was leading 4-2 in the second before Reggi used injury time.
At heavyweight, redshirt sophomore Josh Marchok outworked his much-bigger opponent Sam Alnassiri. After no score in the first period, Marchok elected to go down to start the second. He managed to register an escape and then a takedown for a 3-0 lead. He finished off Alnassiri, 7-2, with a takedown as time was expiring.
At 125 pounds, redshirt junior Evan Silver snapped a two-match skid with a dominating 14-5 major decision over Brandon Vu.
True freshman Mason Pengilly closed things out for the Cardinal with a hard-fought 5-3 decision over Jordan Gurrola.
Stanford travels to Nebraska on Friday and to South Dakota State on Saturday in its final two dual meets of the regular season.
Women’s gymnastics
The Cardinal fought back from a deficit of over a point after one rotation to take a late lead, but Cal retook the lead on the last routine of the day to win The Big Meet 195.475-195.325 Sunday afternoon in Berkeley.
No. 13 Stanford (4-4-1, 2-2 Pac-12) opened on the parallel bars and had a few stumbles to put the team score at 47.925, not the start the Cardinal was looking for in Big Meet. After one rotation, No. 20 Cal (11-1, 3-1 Pac-12) led by 1.15 points.
Minutes later, however, Stanford came up with one of its most clutch performances of the season on the vault. With only five names in the lineup, all five scores would had to count, and all five vaults were stellar, scoring 9.775 or higher, led by Pauline Hanset, who recorded a score of 9.850.
Taylor Rice came up big on floor in the third rotation, leading the Cardinal’s five scores with a 9.9.
Stanford headed into the final rotation — the Cardinal on beam, the Bears on floor — trailing 146.250 to 146.150, a margin of just 0.1 points. And while most teams struggle on the beam, the Cardinal has been strongest on that rotation this season.
Rebecca Wing opened with a 9.85 to give the Cardinal the strong start it needed. Ivana Hong provided the Cardinal’s top score of 9.875.
The Cardinal returns home for its next competition against Pac-12 foe UCLA on Saturday at 4 p.m. at Maples Pavilion and will be broadcast on Pac-12 Networks.
Softball
Stanford scored in double-digits for the third straight game on its way to an 11-0 blanking of UTEP Sunday afternoon. The Cardinal finished the Kajikawa Classic with a 4-2 record.
Stanford’s Haley Snyder (2-2) won for the second time this weekend behind a four-inning, three-hit effort. Snyder gave way to Kylie Sorenson to finish the game.
Stanford batted around in the fifth, scoring seven times, to gain the mercy-rule difference. The frame was highlighted by freshman catcher Victoria Molina, who came off the bench to hit a three-run home run in the first at-bat of her career.
Ten Stanford players had hits, including eight of the nine starters. Sophomore second baseman Lauren Bertoy led the squad with a 2-for-2 outing.
The Cardinal is at home this weekend for the Stanford Nike Invitational. Stanford meets Cal Poly at 3 p.m. and No. 3 Alabama at 5:30 p.m. on Friday.
