Menlo-Atherton sophomore guard Eric Norton converted a three-point play with five seconds left in the game to carry the Bears to a 51-49 victory over Sacred Heart Prep in the opening round of the Burlingame Lions Club Tournament on Tuesday night.
Norton drove the lane, made the layup and was fouled — sinking the free throw to finish off the Bears’ comeback victory.
Menlo-Atherton trailed by nine at halftime, but got back into the game and trailed by only one heading into the final period. SHP took its final lead at 49-47 with 20 seconds left on Mason Randall’s 3-pointer. Norton hit one of two free throws before wrapping up the win with his three-point play.
Norton and Ryan Cole led the Bears (2-2) with 16 points each with Cole adding 10 rebounds. Corbin Koch tallied 17 points and James McLean added 13 for the Gators (0-1). Both teams struggled at the free-throw line, the Bears missing nine while the Gators misfired seven times.
SHP coach Tony Martinelli had six players from the Gators’ CCS championship football team back, but junior Andrew Daschbach sat out the contest with a sore shoulder.
M-A will play Half Moon Bay in a second-round game Wednesday night at 6:30 p.m., with SHP taking on Irvington in consolation action at 3:30 p.m.
In Los Altos Hills, Ryan Brice tallied 23 points and Nathan Beak added 19 to pace host Pinewood to a 68-56 nonleague win over visiting Santa Clara. Jordan Riches contributed 12 points and 15 rebounds for the Panthers (3-1).
“The team played extremely well and showed great growth and character,” said Pinewood coach Mani Messy. “Santa Clara is a tough team and gave our team all they can handle for four quarters. We made some big plays at key moments in the game (in the second half) and it blew the game wide open for us.”
In other games, Menlo School (3-0) posted an 85-65 nonleague win over visiting Burton (San Francisco), Gunn (1-1) dropped a 61-49 decision to Leland in the opening round of the Lions Club Wildcat Shootout at Los Gatos High and Eastside Prep recored a 54-24 nonleague win over Kipp Collegiate of San Jose.
Girls basketball
Destiny Graham poured in 23 points and fellow senior Brije Byers added 19 to pace Eastside Prep to a 65-64 nonleague victory over host Bishop O’Dowd on Tuesday night. Freshman Kayla Tahaafe contributed 14 points for the Panthers (4-1), who open play in the Paris Twins Classic on Thursday.
Elsewhere, freshman guard Tatiana Reese produced 37 points, 14 rebounds and seven steals to lead Priory to a 47-10 nonleague win over host Nueva School. Delara Fontavahn added eight points and four steals with Samantha Sargent pulling down six rebounds for the Panthers (2-0), who grabbed a 27-6 halftime lead.
Boys soccer
Juan Rascon scored in the second half off an assist from Cam Chapman to carry Sacred Heart Prep to a 1-0 nonleague victory over host Cupertino on Tuesday night. The Gators improved to 3-0-1 heading into Thursday’s scheduled home match with Mountain View at 3:30 p.m., weather permitting.
In San Jose, Palo Alto (1-1-2) and Alisal played to a scoreless tie in the second round of the Oak Grove Gold Cup Tournament at Oak Grove High. The Vikings were coming off a 3-2 loss to St. Ignatius in the first round on Saturday.
Girls soccer
Julia Lodoen and Amanda McMaster matched efforts on the field and in the cage to carry Castilleja to a 5-1 nonleague victory over Everest Public on Tuesday at Kelly Park in East Palo Alto.
Lodoen scored two goals in the first half while McMaster had a save in the cage. In the second half, the players switched with McMaster scoring twice and Lodoen coming up with three saves as goalie. Sarah Abramowitz provided the other goal, that coming in the first half as the Gators (2-2) grabbed a 3-0 lead.
In Monterey, freshman Emma Doettling scored two goals to pace visiting Pinewood to a 6-0 nonleague victory over Trinity Christian. The Panthers (3-1) grabbed a 5-0 halftime lead with goals from Laine Corfield, Jordan Berke (assist from Corfield), Nicole Saltzman, Doettling and Jayme Sharkey. Doettling added one more goal in the second half.
