Stanford sophomore Jane Campbell collected national honors for her performance in the Cardinal’s twin road shutouts of ranked teams to open the women’s soccer season last weekend.
Campbell was named national player of the week by CollegeSoccer360.com and National CollegeSlportsMadness.com and was the Pac-12 Goalkeeper of the Week.
Campbell was instrumental in Stanford’s 1-0 season-opening overtime victory at No. 4 North Carolina on Friday and 2-0 victory over No. 18 Duke on Sunday also at the Carolina Nike Invitational.
Campbell made nine saves against the Tar Heels, including five in the first half. In the 76th minute, Campbell stifled a breakaway with a diving catch and save. She earned her seventh and eighth career shutouts.
Stanford, which plays at NSCAA No. 14 Portland on Saturday at 7 p.m., is ranked No. 5 by the NSCAA and No. 4 by Soccer America this week.
Rowing
The U.S. men’s eight advanced through the repechage to the A Final on Wednesday at the World Championships in Amsterdam, The Netherlands.
With former Stanford rowers David Banks and Austin Hack among the nine boat members, the Americans finished second in the race behind France.
Team USA led for much of the race, but France was able to pass them in the final 500 meters to win by 0.41 seconds. The U.S. finished in a time of 5:43.32. Both teams advanced to the A Final where they will race against the two heat winners from Monday in Poland and Germany along with the top two from the other reps race, Great Britain and Russia.
The A Final will take place on the final day of the World Championships this Sunday. It will be the final race of the regatta.
The U.S. women’s eight, meanwhile, didn’t let their race being postponed due to weather affect them as they won the first heat on Wednesday at the World Championships.
The heats were originally scheduled for Tuesday, but water conditions from the weather forced them to push back their race to Wednesday.
An extra day of practice seemed to benefit the nine athletes as they led from start to finish to automatically earn a spot in the A Final. With two former Stanford rowers, Elle Logan (Seat 7) and Grace Luczak (Seat 5), in the lineup, the Americans cruised to a victory by almost seven seconds over Great Britain. Team USA clocked a 6:20.96 in the race.
By winning the heat, the U.S. avoids the repechage on Thursday and will have three days to rest up and get ready for the A Finals on Sunday.
Also competing on Wednesday was junior Filippa Karrfelt. She is racing for Sweden in the women’s double sculls. After placing fifth in the fourth heat on Monday, Karrfelt and her teammate Lovisa Claesson moved to the first race of the reps on Wednesday.
The duo just missed out on reaching the A/B semifinals, as they placed third with a time of 7:41.70. Next up for Karrfelt will be the C/D semifinals on Friday.
The other connection to Stanford at the World Rowing Championships is the lightweight women’s double sculls. Devery Karz and Michelle Sechser are competing in a boat named for Yasmin Farooq, the Cardinal head coach. The “Yaz Farooq” won the second race of the reps with a time of 7:51.00 to advance to the A/B semifinals Thursday.
