An East Palo Alto man has been arrested in connection with an attempted murder in San Mateo, according to San Mateo police.

Officers arrested Enoc Carlos Gonzalez, 18, for allegedly shooting a 22-year-old San Mateo man on Sunday, Aug. 24. Officers responding to a report of shots fired found the man suffering from life-threatening gunshot wounds to his upper body at 3:30 a.m., police said. He was transported to the nearest trauma center, where he remains in critical but stable condition, police Sgt. Rick Decker said.

Police initially determined that the shooter might have been in the immediate area. A perimeter was set up and officers searched through backyards in the surrounding neighborhood. The shooter was not immediately located; police activated a telephone notification message sent to residents to keep the community informed.

Detectives identified a potential suspect later that day and received information that he was hiding inside a residence in San Mateo. The North County Regional SWAT Team served a search warrant at 2:15 p.m. to the residence on North Claremont Street. Gonzalez was quickly taken into custody without incident. He was booked into San Mateo County Jail.

Police are investigating whether the crime is gang-related. Anyone with additional information is urged to contact Investigations at 650-522-7650 or the SMPD Secret Witness Line at 650-522-7676.
