Sacred Heart Prep maintained its share of first place in the West Bay Athletic League boys golf race with a 177-183 victory over neighborhood rival Menlo School on Monday at Palo Alto Municipal Golf Course.
The Gators (6-1, 7-1), who still share the top spot with Harker, knocked Menlo (5-2) into second with a solid effort. Junior Bradley Keller and sophomore Shane Snow each shot 1-under 33 with Bradley Knox carding a 2-over 36, Taylor Oliver shooting 37 and Ryan Galvin a 38. Snow’s score from the third group sealed the victory.
Snow, playing in only his first season of varsity golf, hit is approach shot on the 392-yard par-4 third hole to within inches, allowing for a tap-in birdie.
Junior captain Ethan Wong led the Knights with an even-par 34. Senior Carter Burgess and sophomore Jeff Herr added 37s, along with freshman Rohin Chandra.
Menlo still has a shot to earn a share of the WBAL title, but will have to beat Harker (at Boulder Ridge) and Sacred Heart prep (at Palo Alto Hills) on April 22 and 23 to do so.
Baseball
Menlo received some stellar pitching while recording its third straight victory, a 12-4 nonleague triumph over visiting Woodside on Monday. The Knights moved to 8-5 while the Wildcats dropped to 2-12.
Four Menlo pitchers combined for no walks while the Knights’ defense played error-free ball. Woodside, meanwhile, committed nine errors.
Menlo also took advantage of 10 hits and five walks while jumping out to a 10-2 lead after four innings. Jared Lucian had three hits for the second straight game and added two RBI. Mikey Diekroeger and Macklan Badger also drove in a pair of runs for Menlo, which will host Carlmont on Wednesday in PAL Bay Division action.
Brad Degnan led Woodside with a triple and two doubles.
In San Jose, Palo Alto got three hits and three RBI from senior Bowen Gerould in a 5-1 nonleague victory over host Willow Glen. The Vikings improved to 8-7 with their second straight victory.
A four-run second inning was the difference in the game for Paly, which had 12 hits. Senior Jack Cleasby had a double and two RBI, senior Daniel Tachna-Fram had two hits and sophomore Owen Plambeck had a pair of singles. Senior Chris Smith picked up the pitching win with five innings of six-hit ball.
Girls lacrosse
For the second straight Monday, Menlo School hit the road and faced a senior-loaded opponent — giving up 17 goals both times while dropping both contests.
The latest nonleague setback was to Carondelet, 17-7, at Diablo Valley Middle School. Carondelet (6-2) is the defending North Coast Section champion and last week beat St. Ignatius, 11-7. SI defeated Menlo last Monday, 17-9.
The Knights (7-3) fell behind by 11-3 at the half — missing seven of 10 shots — and were never really in it after that.
Parvathi Narayan led Menlo with three goals with Sophia Donovan adding two. The Knights will visit Sacred Heart Prep on Wednesday (4 p.m.) in a battle for first place in the WBAL. The Gators ended Menlo’s 59-match league win streak last season.
Boys tennis
Despite using only two starters in singles, Victor Pham and Lane Leschly, Menlo School (9-0, 14-3) rolled to a 7-0 victory over visiting King’s Academy in West Bay Athletic League tennis action on Monday. The victory improved the Knights’ ongoing state record of 213-0 in league dual matches since 1995.
