Playing its first dual match in over two weeks, the Stanford men’s tennis team defeated visiting Nevada, 5-2, on Monday afternoon at Taube Family Tennis Stadium.
The Cardinal (5-2) had been idle since notching a 7-0 shutout of Furman on March 8.
After sweeping the doubles point to take a 1-0 lead, Stanford collected singles victories at four of the six spots in the singles lineup.
Maciek Romanowicz secured the match with a 7-5, 6-2 victory over Quentin Mege at the No. 3 spot.
Nevada (11-3) received singles wins from Moez Chargui at No. 2 and Andrew Poustie at No. 4.
Stanford returns to action on Wednesday, beginning a three-match road swing that opens at UNLV. The Cardinal then faces Utah on Friday and Arizona on Sunday.
Women’s tennis
No. 4 Stanford blanked No. 64 Colorado 7-0 on Monday afternoon, sweeping its first Pac-12 road trip of the year.
The Cardinal (11-0, 3-0 Pac-12) notched its seventh shutout overall and third in as many matches.
After quickly securing the doubles point for a 1-0 lead, Carol Zhao followed with a 6-1, 6-1 victory at the No. 3 spot.
Kristie Ahn’s 6-2, 6-1 win at the No. 1 position put Stanford on the verge of clinching the match.
Krista Hardebeck made it official with a 7-6 (5), 6-0 triumph on court two.
Stanford won all six of its singles matches in straight sets.
The Cardinal returns to The Farm this weekend, hosting Arizona on Friday in a match that will be televised on Pac-12 Networks. Doubles play begins at 11:30 a.m., with the match joined in progress for singles.
Women’s water polo
Anna Yelizarova scored three goals and third-ranked Stanford beat host San Diego State, 12-6, in a nonconference match on Monday.
Jamie Neushul and Maggie Steffens each added two for the Cardinal (15-1), which won its sixth straight.
Stanford hosts top-ranked and defending national champion USC on Sunday at 5 p.m. in a rematch of the NCAA title game.
Kelsey Suggs scored 28 seconds into the contest, sparking a 5-0 run for the Cardinal.
Softball
Stanford surrendered five runs, four unearned, in the bottom of the seventh inning as Arizona State completed a three-game sweep of the Cardinal with a 7-5 victory Monday in Pac-12 action.
The Cardinal (1-5, 23-11) took a 5-0 lead into the bottom of the fifth inning. Madi Schreyer (16-6) survived a rough fifth and was solid through six.
The Sun Devils (4-2, 30-5) loaded the bases on two hits and an error to open the seventh. Another error led to a run and ASU completed the comeback with a three-run homer, the only extra base hit Schreyer gave up in the game.
Jessica Plaza gave Stanford a 1-0 lead in the second with a solo home run. The Cardinal tacked on four more runs in the fourth, with Kayla Bonstrom, Tylyn Wells and Hanna Winter each driving in a run.
The Cardinal lost leads in the seventh inning in two of the three games in Tempe.
Stanford travels to Pacific for a nonconference game on Friday at 6 p.m.
Women’s golf
Lauren Kim fired a 3-under 69, Mariah Stackhouse shot a 2-under 70 and Casey Danielson finished at even par as Stanford completed the first round of the San Diego State Farms Invitational on Monday in second place, five strokes behind leader UCLA.
Kim shares fourth on the individual leaderboard, while Stackhouse has sole possession of sixth and Danielson is in a four-way tie for seventh.
Women’s gymnastics
No. 10 Stanford earned a No. 2 seed at the NCAA Baton Rouge Regional — seet for April 5 — where it will pursue a bid to the NCAA Championships.
It is the 31st consecutive season Stanford has advanced to the NCAA regional competition.
Joining the Cardinal in Baton Rouge will be top-seeded LSU, and (in order of seeding) Auburn, Arizona, Kent State and Iowa State. The top two teams in the regional competition will receive an automatic berth to the NCAA Championships in Tuscaloosa, Ala., April 18-20.
The top two all-around competitors and each event winner not on a qualifying team will also receive a bid to the national championships.
The top 36 teams in the country, based on their regional qualifying score, qualified to the regional competition.
The Cardinal has advanced to the NCAA Championships in six of the past seven seasons and 10 of the past 13. Stanford has won five regional titles and 42 individual championships in its 36-year history.
