Chasson Randle did everything he could to help the Stanford men’s basketball team somehow find a way to win. He scored 30 points, shot 56 percent from the field and was perfect in nine free throw attempts.
The Cardinal, though, self-destructed at inopportune times and fell to host Oregon State, 81-72, in a Pac-12 Conference game Thursday.
Dwight Powell added 13 points, grabbed 13 rebounds and led Stanford with four assists. Stefan Nastic added 11 points for the Cardinal (0-2, 9-5), which has lost three of its last four.
It doesn’t get much easier for Stanford, which travels to Eugene to take on No. 17 Oregon in a 2 p.m. tipoff Sunday.
Anthony Brown brought Stanford within 65-63 when he hit a 3-pointer, his only basket of the game, with 4:27 remaining to play.
The Cardinal was still within two with just under three minutes to play before the Beavers went on a 10-2 run over the next two minutes.
Oregon State went away from its trademark 1-3-1 zone defense to pressure Stanford’s 3-point shooting and the strategy worked. The Cardinal was 2 of 8 from long range.
John Gage, who has scored more points against Oregon State than any other team, was held without an attempt.
The Beavers led at halftime, 37-32.
Wrestling
All-American Ryan Mango’s major decision over Ben DeMeulle at 125 pounds clinched Stanford’s 19-12 win over visiting Boise State Thursday in a Pac-12 match at Maples Pavilion.
Evan Silver won at 125 pounds to help the Cardinal (2-0, 9-3) hand the Broncos their first conference loss in two years.
Stanford, which hosts Oregon State on Saturday at 3 p.m., had lost two of its previous three matches. Boise State entered the competition riding a six-match winning streak.
