Chiney Ogwumike scored 31 points, grabbed 13 rebounds and had a team-high six assists to lead the fourth-ranked Stanford women’s basketball team to an 89-76 victory over visiting Oregon State in a Pac-12 Conference contest on Sunday.
Ogwumike scored 30 or more for the fourth time in five games and seventh overall as the Cardinal (2-0, 13-1) won its 12th straight.
“Chiney is our anchor,” Stanford coach Tara VanDerveer said. “Whatever we need, she does inside and outside.”
Freshman guard Lili Thompson scored a season-best 19 points, while Taylor Greenfield added 13 and Mikaela Ruef had 10.
“We came out aggressive and were knocking down shots,” Thompson said. “We settled in early. Chiney is just such an aware player. When she stepped out, she always saw us when we were open.”
Stanford travels to Salt Lake City to take on Utah in a 5 p.m. tipoff to be televised on the Pac-12 Networks.
Ogwumike has 2,143 points, fourth on Stanford’s all-time list and 72 shy of third-place Kate Starbird.
Ogwumike also recorded her 10th double-double of the season and 68th of her career. She has reached double figures in all 14 games thus far and has failed to reach 20 on just three occasions.
Ogwumike has reached double figures in scoring in her past 17 straight games, 49 of 50 and 84 of 87. In 122 games, she has scored at least 10 points in 105 of them.
The Beavers closed to within 13 with under six minutes to play when Sydney Wiese hit a 3-pointer. That was as close as they came.
By the time the Stanford band got warmed up, Ogwumike already had 17 points and the Cardinal held a healthy 29-4 advantage and the game was not even nine minutes old.
“Chiney was ready to knock down outside shots,” Ruef said. “All the posts have worked on their outside shots this year.”
Stanford eventually led by as many as 27 points in the first half and took a 50-30 edge into the intermission.
“It was fun to come out and stomp on them right away,” Ruef said. “We have to keep it up the whole game though. We cannot let up.”
Oregon State missed 13 of its first 16 shots before making 7 of 9 to draw within 42-26 with 3:53 left in the half.
Stanford outscored the Beavers, 19-2, off turnovers and 19-10 on second chance points. Thompson and Orrange combined for another 10 assists.
