Stanford sophomore Madi Bugg has been named the Pac-12 Setter of the Year in women’s volleyball as the annual conference awards were announced today by Commissioner Larry Scott.
Stanford senior Carly Wopat and sophomores Inky Ajanaku and Jordan Burgess were named to the 14-player All-Pac-12 Conference Team. Senior Rachel Williams and sophomore Brittany Howard joined Bugg as honorable-mention selections.
Bugg, who hails from Apex, N.C., leads the Pac-12 with 11.88 assists per set, upping that mark to 12.10 in conference matches. She controls a Cardinal offense that leads the Pac-12 and ranks third in the nation with a .313 hitting percentage and 14.83 kills per set (9th nationally).
Bugg’s assists per set average ranks seventh in the nation and she’s had two of the Pac-12’s seven 60-plus assist outings on the season. Bugg is earning the first all-conference honors of her career after being named to the all-freshman team a year ago.
Wopat, a middle blocker from Santa Barbara, earned her third career all-conference honor. The senior leads the Pac-12 and ranks seventh in the nation with a .438 hitting percentage. She also leads the Pac-12 in blocks per set with 1.41 (16th nationally) and paces the Cardinal with 3.83 points per set. She garnered Pac-12 Offensive and Defensive Player of the Week honors this season, and moved into third place on the Cardinal’s career blocks list (592).
Ajanaku is a repeat All-Pac-12 honoree, earning first-team and freshman honors last season. The Tulsa, Okla., native led the Pac-12 in conference matches with a .448 hitting percentage and 1.46 blocks per set. On the season, the middle blocker is eighth nationally with a .438 attack percentage and 19th with 1.40 blocks per set. She is the reigning AVCA National Player of the Week and the Pac-12 Offensive Player of the Week.
Burgess is also a two-time all-conference recipient as a sophomore. The Fort Myers, Fla., native led Stanford in Pac-12 matches with 3.01 kills per set on a .311 hitting percentage. On the season, the outside hitter is one of five Cardinal players to be averaging at leads 2.60 kills per set (2.74). Burgess has five double-doubles and is collecting 2.68 digs per set.
Williams received her third career conference honor, earning first-team accolades in 2011 and honorable mention in 2012. The Los Gatos native leads the Cardinal with 10 double-doubles on the season, averaging 2.77 kills and 2.59 digs per set. She became just the 13th Stanford player since 1986 to register 1,000 career kills earlier this season and surpassed the 700 career digs mark. She is the only Cardinal player to register 20-plus kills in a match in 2013 (21 vs. Florida 9/7), and was named the AVCA National Player of the Week (11/26) and the Pac-12 Offensive Player of the Week (11/25).
Howard is being recognized for the second time in her career after receiving all-conference honors as a freshman in 2012. An outside hitter from Los Altos, she is second on the team with 2.82 kills per set, while also tallying 2.60 digs and 3.35 points per set. She is tied for second on the squad with seven double-doubles on the year and is one of three Cardinal players on the team to have registered 500 career kills and 500 career digs.
