Sacred Heart Prep will defend its Central Coast Section Division IV football title as the No. 1 seed. The Gators (9-1) will open Saturday at home against No. 8 Seaside (5-5) at 1 p.m.
While Sacred Heart Prep won last year’s title with a victory over rival Menlo School, that matchup won’t happen in this year’s bracket. Should No. 4 Menlo (6-4) get past No. 5 Monterey (7-3) in Friday’s opener at Sequoia High, the Knights most likely will face SHP in the semifinals.
Two other local teams, Palo Alto and Menlo-Atherton, could meet in the Division II playoffs. However, that wouldn’t be until the championship game. Before that, both squads have some work to do.
Third-seeded Menlo-Atherton (7-3) will open Friday by hosting No. 6 Oak Grove (5-5) while No. 5 Palo Alto (5-5) will travel to San Jose to face No. 4 Leland (7-3), both at 7 p.m.
Should the Bears advance, they’ll likely face No. 2 Los Gatos in the semifinals while the Vikings probably would face No. 1 St. Francis.
