Consistency was the keyword for the Menlo-Atherton boys and girls in cross country this season. The girls won all the regular-season meets while the boys finished third.
Not too surprisingly, that’s where the Bears finished on Saturday at the Peninsula Athletic League Championships at Crystal Springs in Belmont.
The M-A girls remained perfect in league competition and successfully defended their PAL title by scoring just 20 points to easily defeat Half Moon Bay (48) and Aragon (114).
M-A sophomore Madeleine Baier improved upon her seventh-place finish of a year ago by winning the individual title in 18:41.5 over the 2.95-mile layout. She ran 20:01 last year.
Fellow sophomore Katie Beebe clocked 18:55.3 for second and senior Taylor Fortnam finished fourth in 19:48.6. She was also fourth last year while Beebe was 15th.
Senior Annika Roise was sixth for M-A in 20:04.8 and sophomore teammate Annalisa Crowe was seventh, rounding out the scoring in 20:04.8.
The Bears place all seven of their runners among the top 17 as sophomore Maddie Worden (20:57.7) was 16th and sophomore Cat DePuy (21:01.1) was 17th.
The M-A boys, meanwhile, finished third with 106 points while trailing Carlmont (22) and Half Moon Bay (62). The Bears were second last season.
M-A senior Zach Plante led the Bears with a sixth-place finish of 16:02.1. Adam Scandlyn was 16th (17:01.3), Kevin Conrad was 23rd (17:14.9), Arnaud Laprais 25th (17:20.9) and Charlie Cain 36th (17:51.8).
Next up for Menlo-Atherton will be the Central Coast Section Championships on Saturday, also at Crystal Springs. The girls will run in Division I at 2:40 p.m., with the boys following at 3:15 p.m.
