Through two rounds of the Pac-12 Preview at Nanea Golf Club, the Stanford women’s golf team sits fifth among the 12-team field while a pair of Cardinal stand in the top 10.
Stanford held strong Monday with rounds of 292-289 to finish 3-under through 36 holes. Washington leads the pack at 16-under.
No. 3 Stanford resumes play Tuesday at the 54-hole event, which is the first non-member tournament ever to be held at par-73, 6,112-yard track in the 10-year history of the course.
Mariah Stackhouse had a bogey-free back nine to open with a 71, and overcome two back-nine bogeys with birdies on three of the last four holes for another 71 to finish at 4-under.
Stackhouse sits in a tie for sixth and Mariko Tumangan is tied for 10th. Tumangan matched the second-lowest opening-round score with a 69. Tumangan started her first round par-bogey-birdie-eagle while registering a 4-under. She would finish with a 1-over 74 in the second round.
Casey Danielson followed her 5-over 78 with a 3-under 70, Lauren Kim went 74-76, and Quirine Eijkenboom finished 6-over after rounds of 78 and 74.
Women’s cross country
Menlo College’s Jessica Marso earned her second straight trip to the NAIA cross country National Championships with another outstanding effort Monday.
The Lady Oaks finished sixth in the Cal Pac Conference championships at Woodward Park in Fresno. Marso, a junior, finished fifth in the 5k race, completing the course in 20:11.
“It was really exciting and it’s great to see,” Menlo coach Sean Weeks said. “She expected to go back to Nationals and worked hard day in and day out to achieve her goal. She was determined and it was great to see her hard work pay off.”
The Lady Oaks also received strong efforts from Aaliyah Sowards, who finished 30th with a time of 22:19, and Emmeline Wang, whose time of 22:26 was good for 32nd. Also competing for Menlo were Jennifer Capser (41st, 23:16) and Victoria Schultz (54th, 24:59).
Marso, who also earned All-Conference honors, will run in the NAIA Women’s Cross Country National Championships on Nov. 23 in Lawrence, Kan.
On the men’s side, the Oaks finished ninth with a number of runners running for the first time this season. Edgar Paez was Menlo’s top finisher with a time of 33:27, good for 57th place in the 8k race. Tyler Thomas, Joel Palabrica, Kyle West and Kyle Lopez rounded out the Menlo team effort.
