Stanford’s Four boat advanced to the IRA Men’s Rowing Championships Grand Final with a solid effort Friday, while the I Eight and Frosh Eight finished outside of the top three in their respective semifinals and will race in Saturday’s petite finals.
The I Eight was edged by 0.63 of a second, despite posting the fourth-fastest time of the day among all 12 boats in the semifinal round, and the fastest time ever recorded by a Stanford boat at the IRA Championships (5:31.346).
“The men released a significant amount of courage, loyalty, spirit and proficiency upon one another,” Stanford coach Craig Amerkhanian said. “Our varsity four is in the grand final while our varsity eight put up the fourth-fastest time of the day. Our effort was worthy of the grand final but Wisconsin held us off by six-tenths of a second.”
Stanford’s Four advanced to Saturday’s Grand Final with a second-place finish in the second semifinal of its class. The Cardinal boat battled for the lead against the crew from the U.S. Naval Academy, in the end finishing with a time of 6:20.087, seven-thousandths of a second behind the Midshipmen.
“In 21 years of Pac-10 collegiate coaching this day is my proudest regarding the maximum effort and brotherhood revealed by the Stanford varsity entries,” Amerkhanian said.
Men’s golf
Stanford sophomore Andrew Yun, who had seven top five finishes among his 11 events this year, was named a PING First Team All-American by the Golf Coaches Association of America on Friday.
Yun was Stanford’s top finisher in nine of the team’s 11 events this past season and won his first collegiate title at The Prestige at PGA West.
A first team All-Pac-10 selection, Yun was also a semifinalist for the Hogan Award, which honors the top player in collegiate golf.
Women’s crew
The second-ranked Stanford lightweight team qualified both boats for Saturday’s grand finals at the IRA Championships in Cherry Hill, N.J. with top efforts Friday.
The I Eight will get the chance to go for a repeat national title in Saturday’s Grand Final, which is set for an 8 a.m. (PT) start. The Four race in its Grand Final at 5:09 a.m.
The I Eight earned its way to the day’s fastest time in its class, winning the second heat in a time of 6:37.933, defeating Wisconsin, Bucknell and MIT. The Cardinal will face the Badgers and Bison again in tomorrow’s Grand Final, along with top-ranked Princeton, Radcliffe and Georgetown.
In the Four class, Stanford won its heat with a final time of 7:52.514, besting Loyola (Maryland), Tulsa and MIT. The boat will race in tomorrow’s Grand Final against Loyola, MIT, Princeton, Radcliffe and Wisconsin.
General
Stanford senior Sarah Flynn was presented with the Stanford Alumni Association’s Outstanding Achievement Award for making a significant impact on the Stanford community.
Howard Wolf, Vice President for Alumni Affairs and President of the Alumni Association, announced the award at a private reception on Tuesday.
Flynn, who was captain of the women’s lacrosse team, demonstrated a remarkable work ethic and has been a role model for all of her teammates.
In addition, Flynn has done outstanding work with the Cardinal Council. A member of the Cap and Gown Honor Society, Flynn has been an Undergraduate Mentor for the Partners in Academic Excellence, a volunteer for the Stanford Hospital’s Pediatric Emergency Department, a volunteer for the Bay Area Women’s’ Sports Initiative and an active member of the Stanford Catholic Community. Flynn exudes warmth, integrity and sincerity.
