Mark Appel took a no-hitter into the seventh inning and settled for a four-hitter Friday as the Stanford baseball team downed host USC, 8-1, Friday in the opener of a three-game Pac-10 series.
Appel pitched his first career complete game for the Cardinal (3-1, 15-7), which plays at USC again Saturday at 6 p.m.
Austin Wilson and Zach Jones each drove in two runs for 13th-ranked Stanford, which won its fifth straight.
Menlo School grad Kenny Diekroeger had two hits, extending his streak to 16 games. Brian Ragira and Tyler Gaffney each had three hits while Ben Clowe, Lonnie Kauppila, Wilson and Jones each added two hits.
Appel struck out seven and did not walk a batter. He retired 13 in a row at one point and did not allow a hit until the first batter of the seventh.
Men’s golf
Stanford junior David Chung shot a second-round 76 and finished his first appearance at the Masters with a 36-hole score of 148, missing the cut for the weekend.
Chung did finish ahead of Peter Uihlein, the defending U.S. Amateur champ who beat Chung last summer. Uihlein shot 149, leaving Chung as the top U.S. amateur in the tourney. Chung also finished ahead of world No. 1-ranked Martin Kaymer (150), defending British Open champ Louis Oosthuizen (148), former Stanford great Tom Watson (151) and Vijay Singh (154).
Chung was 3-over on his front nine and 1-over on the back to finish 4-over for the day and 4-over for the tournament.
Women’s lacrosse
Sarah Flynn scored four times and Karen Nesbitt and Anna Boeri each added three goals as No. 7 Stanford beat visiting Denver, 16-6, in a Mountain Pacific Sports Federation contest Friday night.
“I thought it was a really good effort,” Stanford coach Amy Bokker said. “It was great to honor our seniors this way and play well in our last home game.”
Annie Read recorded 12 saves for the Cardinal (4-0, 12-1), which plays at Oregon next Friday.
Women’s tennis
Top-ranked Stanford downed visiting Fresno State, 7-0, Friday in a nonconference match.
Veronica Li’s 6-3, 6-0 victory at the No. 6 spot clinched the win, one of five straight-set victories for Stanford, which won its 39th straight match dating to last year.
The Cardinal also extended its NCAA record home winning streak to 177 matches, including 32 NCAA tournaments matches.
Stanford hosts No. 23 Washington on Saturday, April 9, at 12 p.m. Senior Day festivities honoring Hilary Barte, Carolyn McVeigh and Jennifer Yen will take place before the doubles competition.
Men’s tennis
Stanford beat host Washington, 4-3, in a Pac-10 Conference match Friday, its season-best fifth consecutive victory.
Stanford (3-1, 13-5, 3-1 Pac-10) took the doubles point with victories at the top two spots of the lineup, with Denis Lin and Matt Kandath providing the clincher in an 8-6 win at No. 2.
Bradley Klahn’s 6-4, 6-2 victory over Jeevan Nedunchezhiyan at the top of the singles ladder gave Stanford a 2-0 lead.
Alex Clayton made it 3-1 when he defeated Martin Kildahl 6-4, 6-3 at the No. 3 spot.
Denis Lin came through with the clincher in a 6-3, 6-4 victory over Daniel Schmidt on court four.
Stanford visits Oregon for an 11 a.m. match Saturday.
Men’s volleyball
Brad Lawson and Spencer McLachlin each recorded 13 kills but Stanford fell to host UC Santa Barbara, 25-22, 23-25, 25-23, 15-16, in a Mountain Pacific Sports Federation match Friday night.
Eric Mochalski added 10 kills for the defending national champion Cardinal (13-6, 17-7), which plays at UCLA at 7 p.m. Saturday.
Softball
Corey Hanewich tripled, doubled and drove in four runs but Stanford dropped a 6-5 decision to host UCLA in 14 innings Friday night in a Pac-10 Conference contest.
Stanford (0-4, 26-8) and the Bruins meet again Saturday.
The Cardinal took a 4-2 lead into the bottom of the seventh, thanks to Hanewich’s two-out, bases-loaded triple in the top of the fourth and Ashley Hansen’s RBI single.
UCLA tied it on a two-run home run and it stayed at 4-all until Hanewich doubled home a run in the top of the 13th.
The Bruins answered with their own run in the 13th and ended it with a home run in the 14th.
Teagan Gerhart went the first 13 innings, striking out 12 and giving up four runs on 12 hits.
