Stanford’s top four singles players responded after the Cardinal women’s tennis team dropped the doubles point in its Pac-10 match with visiting Arizona State on Friday.
Mallory Burdette, Nicole Gibbs, Kristie Ahn and Hilary Barte each won in straight sets to clinch top-ranked Stanford’s 6-1 victory over the Sun Devils.
Stanford extended its NCAA-record home winning streak to 175 consecutive matches (143 in regular season play, 32 in NCAA tournament play).
The Cardinal has won 37 straight overall.
Saturday’s match against Arizona has been cancelled and will not be rescheduled. The top-ranked Cardinal hosts Fresno State next Friday at 1:30 p.m.
The Wildcats were unable to travel to the Bay Area.
Men’s tennis
Matt Kandath came back from a first set loss to rally for the clinching victory in Stanford’s 4-3 victory over visiting Tulsa on Friday night in a nonconference contest.
The Cardinal (10-5) travels to Arizona for a Pac-10 match on Sunday.
Stanford won the doubles point and then took a 3-0 lead behind victories from Alex Clayton and Greg Hirshman.
Bradley Klahn, Denis Lin and Ryan Thacher each won their first sets but then were beaten when the Hurricanes rallied, leaving it up to Kandath.
Baseball
Washington State scored eight times in the bottom of the eighth inning to erase an early deficit and beat visiting Stanford, 10-8, in a Pac-10 contest Friday night.
The Cardinal (0-1, 11-7) took an 8-0 lead into the bottom of the sixth. Mark Appel allowed two runs on five hits over seven innings. He walked three and struck out a career-high seven.
A.J. Vanegas, Scott Snodgress and Chris Reed could not hold the lead as the Cougars had 11 players reach base, eight on hits, in the eighth.
Zach Jones drove in four runs on two huts, one a three-run home run. Stephen Piscotty drove in two runs and Brian Ragira added a home run.
Lonnie Kauppila added three hits as the Cardinal look to rebound Saturday at 2 p.m.
Women’s lacrosse
Lauren Schmidt scored five goals as Stanford beat visiting California, 19-11, in a Mountain Pacific Sports Federation contest Friday.
Karen Nesbitt and Sarah Flynn each added three goals as the Cardinal (2-0, 10-1) handed the Bears their first conference setback.
Anna Kim and Carolyn Bradley each added a pair of goals for Stanford, which plays at St. Mary’s on Sunday.
Men’s volleyball
Brad Lawson and Spencer McLachlin combined for 31 kills and 22 digs but No.2 Stanford proved no match for top-ranked USC, dropping a 25-22, 21-25, 25-22, 25-22 match to the visiting Trojans on Friday night in the MPSF.
Stanford (12-6, 16-7) hosts Pepperdine at 7 p.m. Saturday.
Women’s golf
Stanford opened the PING-ASU Invitational Friday in Tempe with a first round score of 290, good for fifth place on the leaderboard.
The Cardinal trail first place UCLA by 14 strokes after the Bruins blitzed the ASU Karsten Course with a 12-under 276. The Bruins are five strokes ahead of second place USC at 281 and 10 shots clear of third place Texas at 286.
Stanford is one stroke behind fourth place Arizona (289) heading into Saturday’s second round.
With temperatures hovering around 100 degrees in Tempe, Stanford sophomores Sally Watson and Kristina Wong each shot an opening round of 71, and are tied for tenth.
Softball
Danielle Miller got the only hit as Stanford fell to visiting Arizona, 8-0, in the Pac-10 Conference opener Friday night.
The 12th-ranked Cardinal (0-1, 24-5) fell behind, 3-0, after the first inning and never recovered.
The same two teams meet again Saturday afternoon.
