Stanford junior Bobby Bollier set a pool record in the 200 fly with the top time of 1:41.63 in the preliminaries. He improved that in the finals to a school record of 1:40.76 and finished second as the Cardinal men’s swimming team finished third on the final day of the NCAA championships in Minneapolis, Minn., on Saturday.
California, which finished second to the Cardinal in the Pac-10 championships, earned its third team title and first since winning back-to-back crowns in 1979 and 1980. The Bears scored 493 points with defending champion Texas second with 470 1/2 and Stanford third with 403.
Cal also became the first school since 1998 to win both the men’s and women’s Division I national titles under different coaches.This year, California did it under Teri McKeever and Dave Durden. In 1998, Stanford captured both titles with Richard Quick and Skip Kenney at the helm of their respective programs.
Stanford’s third-place finish means the Cardinal has finished fourth or better in each of the past 29 years, though the last NCAA title occurred in 1998.
Stanford’s Chad La Tourette tied for second, swimming a 14:34.80 in the 1,650 free. He was the defending champion.
Also for the Cardinal, Matthew Swanston swam 1:42.00 to finish fourth in the 200 back. Teammate Matt Thompson was fifth in 1:42.12.
Curtis Lovelace placed fourth in the 200 breast, swimming 1:54.10. Austin Staab was sixth in the 100 free.
