Jasmine Tosky and Maddy Schaefer wrapped up a huge weekend of standout swimming while helping Palo Alto Stanford Aquatics win the combined team title at the Southern Zone-Speedo Champions Series at Texas A&M University in College Station.
Tosky, a junior at Palo Alto High, won three individual events and swam on two winning relays while Schaefer, a senior at St. Francis, finished first, second and third in her events while also swimming on two winning relays on Saturday and Sunday as the PASA men and women combined for 732 points.
Tosky was simply sensational as she swam times that would rank among the nation’s best collegians heading into the NCAA Championships. On Saturday, she won the 200-yard breaststroke in 2:10.56, which would be the No. 15 seed time for NCAAs. She also won the 400 IM in 4:04.65, which would be No. 7 for NCAAs. It also broke her own meet record of 4:11.01 set last season.
Tosky finished up Saturday by leading off the winning 400 free relay with a 49.30 time as PASA won in a meet record of 3:16.58, well ahead of its previous mark of 3:19.81. Sacred Heart Prep freshman Ally Howe, Julia Ama from Gunn and Schaefer rounded out the team.
On Sunday, Tosky won the 100 breast in 1:01.21 and captured the 200 IM in a sizzling 1:54.80, which would rank her No. 3 in the nation prior to NCAAs. It, too, was a meet record — breaking her own mark of 1:57.46 from last year. Tosky finished up the meet with a leg on the winning 400 medley relay team that set a meet record of 4:40.18, breaking PASA’s previous mark of 3:41.84 from 2010. Howe, Paly senior Sarah Liang and Schaefer rounded out the squad.
Schaefer, who is headed to Stanford in the fall, opened Saturday with a third-place finish in the 200 free of 1:47.00. On Sunday, she finished second in the 100 back (54.45) and later won the 50 free in a meet record of 22.28, breaking her own mark of 22.49 from last season.
In other events from Saturday and Sunday:
Howe, 15, was second in the 100 fly in 53.19. That would have placed her second at the Central Coast Section championships last season. Alicia Grima was fifth (55.43), Schaefer seventh (55.90) and Naomi Thomas 11th (55.53).
Howe also was third in the 50 free in 23.07 while Ama was sixth in 23.31. Liang was fourth in the 100 breast (1:04.06), Howe was fourth in the 200 IM (2:02.59) and Grima was seventh in the 400 IM in 4:19.83.
In the men’s meet, Stanford grad Phillip Morrison was second in the 50 free (20.54), third in the 200 free (1:37.33) and ninth in the 100 fly (49.61) in addition to swimming on the 800 free relay (third in 6:42.67) and 400 medley relay (fifth in 3:27.40). The 800 team included Paly’s Andrew Liang and Byron Sanborn plus Ronald Chen while William Lee led off the medley relay with Sanborn, Liang and Morrison.
Sanborn also took ninth in the 200 breast (2:02.44) and 11th in the 100 breast (58.15).
