Menlo School grad Kenny Diekroeger hit a home run and drove in two runs as the Stanford baseball team beat visiting California, 3-2, in its home opener Tuesday night.
Jake Stewart added two hits for the eighth-ranked Cardinal (3-1), which won its second straight. Lonnie Kauppila added a double.
Stanford travels to Vanderbilt for a three-game nonconference series beginning Friday night.
Cardinal starter Jordan Pries (1-0) pitched four scoreless innings, allowing one hit and striking out four. Scott Snodgress pitched the final two innings for his first save.
“Opening day is still a little nerve-wracking even though it’s my third year here,” Pries said. “I was pretty amped up. I settled in after a couple of innings.”
Diekroeger led off the second inning with a home run to give Stanford its early lead. He added a run-scoring single in the third inning. Tyler Gaffney also drove in a run.
Prior to the game, Stanford announced that left-handed pitcher Brett Mooneyham had season-ending finger surgery.
The junior and two-year weekend starter cut his left middle finger in January and had surgery last week. Mooneyham is 9-10 with a 4.67 ERA over 28 career starts. He was a member of Team USA this past summer and also pitched in Yarmouth-Dennis of the Cape Cod League.
Women’s volleyball
Stanford senior Alix Klineman was picked as one of the 12 semifinalist for the annual AAU Sullivan Award, it was learned Tuesday.
The award, honoring the nation’s most outstanding amateur athlete, has been presented annually since 1930. It is based on leadership, character and sportsmanship. Fans can vote online.
Klineman, a four-time All-American, was the Pac-10 Conference Player of the Year. She became the second player ever to register 2,000 career kills as she finished with a career-best .372 hitting percentage.
Women’s water polo
Freshman driver Kaley Dodson was named Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Newcomer of the Week for the second time in 2011, the conference announced Monday.
Dodson scored twice in No. 1 Stanford’s 15-4 victory at No. 19 Pacific Sunday afternoon, helping the Cardinal stretch it’s season-opening winning streak to nine games.
The two goals brought Dodson’s season tally to 14, good for a tie for third on the team scoring list.
Women’s gymnastics
Fifth-year senior Allyse Ishino is expected to be out 3-5 weeks after spraining her ankle on Friday in a dual-meet victory over Arizona.
Ishino, a Stanford team captain and the team’s top all-around competitor, could be back in a limited role at the Pac-10 Championships on March 19 in Los Angeles, but more likely would return for the NCAA regionals on April 2. She is expected to be ready for the NCAA Championships April 14-16 in Cleveland.
Ishino suffered the injury on the first tumbling pass of her floor exercise routine at Arizona. She already had won the uneven bars for her seventh victory of the season, covering every event.
Ishino, who leads the team in all-around scoring average with 39.345, has overcome obstacles before. As a freshman, she suffered a pulmonary embolism that caused her to redshirt. The following year, in 2008, she suffered a knee injury.
