The top-ranked Stanford women’s tennis team, playing without Mallory Burdette, picked up right where they left off Wednesday, beating visiting UC Davis, 7-0, in the season opener.
Stacey Tan clinched the victory at No.4 singles for the Cardinal, which won its final 19 matches in capturing last year’s NCAA team title.
Stanford extended its home winning streak to 165 matches (133 regular season, 32 NCAA tournament), a streak that spans nearly 12 seasons and is the longest active home winning streak among all sports in Division I athletics.
The Cardinal last tasted defeat at home, 5-4, to California on Feb. 27, 1999. The Bears ended Stanford’s then-record 54-match home winning streak. So, yes, that means the Cardinal has won 219 of its last 220 matches played at Taube Tennis Center.
Stanford hosts Cal Poly in the ITA Kickoff Weekend at 10 a.m. Friday. The Cardinal hosts Cal Poly on Friday, Jan. 28, at 2 p.m. The winner meets Oklahoma or UNLV at 2 p.m. Saturday.
The weekend survivor moves on to the National Team Indoor Championships for the final rounds in Charlottesville, VA beginning Feb. 17.
Women’s basketball
Stanford’s Kayla Pedersen is one of 10 players named as finalists for the Lowe’s Senior CLASS Award on Wednesday. Fan voting is underway.
An acronym for Celebrating Loyalty and Achievement for Staying in School®, the Lowe’s Senior CLASS Award focuses on the total student-athlete and encourages students to use their platform in athletics to make a positive impact as leaders in their communities.
To be eligible for the award, a student-athlete must be classified as an NCAA Division I senior and have notable achievements in four areas of excellence – community, classroom, character and competition.
Lacrosse
Stanford, the defending Mountain Pacific Sports Federation tournament champions, was voted by the coaches to repeat this season.
The Cardinal was a near unanimous choice, earning six of the seven first place votes and 36 points overall.
Denver received the remaining first place vote and was chosen second, while California and Oregon were picked to tie for third. UC Davis, Saint Mary’s and Fresno State rounded out the bottom three of the conference.
